Narrative Report: Project BASA (Boosting reading Activities for

Struggling readers to improve Academic performance)
SY 2022-2023

Alupay Elementary School embarked on an exciting and transformative

journey to elevate its students' reading abilities through Project BASA
(Boosting reading Activities for Struggling readers to improve Academic
performance).
The implementation of Project BASA was a milestone in our
commitment to promoting literacy and cultivating a love for reading among
students in Grade 1 to Grade 6. The program aimed to improve reading
proficiency, create a reading culture, and enhance parental involvement in
supporting their children's reading habits. The project's implementation
spanned a period of ten months, from September 2022 to June 2023.and
during this period, various activities and strategies were executed to achieve
our objectives.

Activity 1: Pre – Oral Reading Assessment

The journey began with an essential step: conducting a pre-oral reading
assessment. The assessment helped identify each student's current reading
proficiency, serving as a benchmark to gauge their progress throughout the
program.

Activity 2: Phil- IRRI for Grade III - VI (Pre and Post Test)
Following the pre-assessment, students participated in the Philippine
Informal Reading Inventory (Phil-IRRI) as both a pre-test and a post-test. This
valuable tool provided comprehensive insights into students' strengths and
areas that needed improvement, allowing teachers to tailor interventions
accordingly.

Activity 3: Display letters and words around the classroom

To foster a print-rich environment, colorful letters and words adorned
the classroom walls. This strategic display aimed to immerse students in a

literacy-rich atmosphere, enabling them to encounter words in various

contexts and enhance their reading comprehension.

Activity 4: Adopt Reading Intervention

The core of Project BASA revolved around a diverse set of reading
interventions:
Phonics: Students delved into the world of phonics, understanding the
relationship between letters and sounds, thereby strengthening their
decoding skills.
Reading Aloud: Engaging in regular reading aloud sessions enriched
students' fluency and expression, as they listened to and imitated proper
pronunciation and intonation.
Word Analysis: Through word analysis exercises, students learned to
deconstruct unfamiliar words, empowering them to decipher meanings
independently.
Reading basic sight words through flashcards and video clips: Sight
words, a vital component of fluent reading, were reinforced through
interactive methods, such as flashcards and video clips.
Reciting tongue twisters: As a fun and challenging activity, tongue
twisters honed students' enunciation and articulation.
Listening to correct pronunciation of words through video clips: Visual
and auditory aids like video clips supplemented classroom learning,
providing students with accurate models for pronunciation.
Conducting spelling contests: Spelling contests not only encouraged
friendly competition but also motivated students to build their vocabulary and
spelling accuracy.
Choral Reading of word phrases: Choral reading cultivated a sense of
camaraderie among students while developing their reading fluency and
rhythm.
Use of Art of Questioning or “HOTS” questioning to develop critical
thinking: Teachers skillfully employed Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS)
questions to encourage students to analyze, evaluate, and synthesize
information from their readings, nurturing critical thinking abilities.

Activity 5: Implement Peer Reading

Collaboration was paramount in Project BASA. Students engaged in
peer reading sessions, taking turns to read and listen to each other. This
activity not only bolstered their reading proficiency but also strengthened
communication and interpersonal skills.

Activity 6: Individualized Reading Instruction

Recognizing that every student's learning journey is unique, Project
BASA incorporated individualized reading instruction. Teachers catered to the
specific needs and levels of each student, fostering personalized growth and
progress.

Activity 7: Reading assessment every first and last Friday of the month
Regular assessments were conducted every first and last Friday of the
month to monitor students' advancement continuously. These assessments
allowed educators to adjust instructional approaches and strategies as
needed.

Activity 8: Remedial reading / Guided Reading

For students requiring additional support, remedial reading sessions
and guided reading groups were conducted. These interventions provided
targeted help, nurturing struggling readers towards improvement.

Activity 9: Reproduce reading materials and send them home

To reinforce the importance of reading beyond the classroom, reading
materials were reproduced and sent home with the students. This encouraged
families to actively participate in their child's reading journey, fostering a
holistic learning environment.

Activity 10: Home Visitation

In a bid to bridge the school-home connection, teachers conducted
home visitations. These visits not only strengthened bonds with the students'
families but also provided educators with valuable insights into the students'
learning context.
