Refer to the passage below to answer Q71 to 80

I learnt to appreciate the value of money as I grew up in a family with few luxuries. Although my
mother was thrifty, she was not one to shy away from helping others. As a mother now, I want to nurture
this value in my children, Xinli and Yongli, who, unlike me, seldom watch their spending As such, I got
them together to brainstorm ideas for a little family project to show kindness to others.
Xinli suggested enthusiastically, "Aha! Mum can bake cookies and sell them to raise some funds
for a charity!"
"I will get my friends to buy them, and Mum can reward me by baking extra cookies for me!"
Yongli offered as he looked at me with a cheeky grin.
Frowning, I kept quiet for a while. After some thought, I replied with care so as not to dampen,
their spirits. "Good suggestions, but I believe you will get more out of helping others when you are
personally involved." Though they had blank looks on their faces, I continued, "By the way, our
neighbour, Mrs Riya, was unwell recently. As she lives alone, I've promised to buy groceries for her so
that she can cook nice meals for herself."
"We'll help you! I'll ask Dad for money to buy the groceries," Xinli quipped.
"Well, maybe you should earn the money yourselves. It's actually your responsibility to tidy our
home but just this once, I'll pay you to do housework. Knowing they would come up with creative
excuses to get out of doing housework, I gave them a determined look. They knew better than to argue
for an easy way out.
The following week, we were at the supermarket. As we were pushing a fully loaded trolley of
necessities meant for Mrs Riya, Yongli suddenly pointed at an array of flowers in the next aisle and
exclaimed, "Ooh, what pretty roses! Let's get those for her too!"
I protested, "But you can't eat roses! You should spend the money on food instead."
"But we worked hard for the money. Please let us buy the roses," Yongli pleaded. My advice had
fallen on deaf ears, so I let my children decide in the end.
On the day of the visit, we found ourselves warmly welcomed into a sparsely furnished but well-
kept flat by Mrs Riya. Looking at the bags of groceries we had bought, she could not stop smiling. When
Yongli presented the roses to her, she raised her eyebrows, but said nothing. I cast Mrs Riya a sheepish
glance when she looked at us. Mrs Riya suggested, "Let's take a 'wefie' with my favourite gift!" With Mrs
Riya holding the roses, we huddled together to take a group photo with Xinli's mobile phone.
"I heard you bought these with money earned through doing chores! How kind of you!" said Mrs
Riya. She put her nose to the roses to take in the fragrance. When she lifted her head, her face lit up with
a radiant smile. Clearly, her reaction had touched the children for their faces mirrored hers. Before this
visit, they might not have thought that they would bring such joy to Mrs Riya through their small act of
kindness. I could not be more proud of them.
On our way home after visiting Mrs Riya, Yongli shared about his experience. He finally
understood why I had wanted them to be personally involved in helping others - Mrs Riya was not the
only one who felt joyful.
Just as I was about to praise them, Xinli, who was looking at the photo taken earlier, interrupted,
"Mum, we're smiling in the photo, but why do you have a puzzled look?"
