CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
A. Background of the problem
English is the international language. By mastering English well and
correctly, we will be able to communicate with other language in the world.
Apart from that, we will also increase our knowledge of science for the
progress of our nation and country, because we will be able to read English
literature, listen to foreign radio boardcast, and watch other scientific films. In
this way, in the end we can master knowledge in all flied.
How ever, of course, in learning English there are rules for using
sentence/words that we must also learn so that our English pronountion
becomes good and correct.

2. What is present continuous tense?

DISCUSSION

A. Simple present tense


1. understanding
Simpe present tense is a form of verb that is used to express facts, habits, or
event that are happening at the moment.
2. Function
a) Expresses repeated events
b) States general truths
c) Express feelings, emotions, thoughts, or possessions.
d) Give orders or instructions.
e) Explains future conditions
3. Characteristics
a) The simple present tense is used to express habits that are carried out
regularly
b) Verb-1 in simple present tense form with a plural subject is added
with s/es.
c) Verb-1 in simple present tense form does not add s/es to the singular
subject.
d) The simple present tense is used to state facts commonly occur
4. Form
a) Verbal present tense
verbal present tense is a sentence that contain an action.
The form is:
- (+) : Subject + verb 1 (s/es) + Object
Ex: I eat an apple, you play a football with your friends
- (-) : subject + (do/does) not + verb-1 + Object

Ex: I do not eat an apple, you do not play football with your
friends
- (?) : (do/does) + Subject + verb-1 + ?
Ex: do I eat an apple?, do you play football with your friends?
b) Nominal present tense
Nominal present tense is a sentence that does not contain an action.
The form is
- (+) : subject + be ( is/am/are) + complement
Ex : he is a teacher, I am a student
- (-) : subject + be (is/am/are) + not + complement
Ex: he is not a teacher, I am not a student
- (?) : be (is/am/are) + subject + (?)
Ex : is he a teacher?, am I a student?
B. Present continuous tense
1. Understanding
Present continuous tense is a verb form that is used to express actions that
are taking place now (present) or plans for the future.
2. Function
a) State the events that are taking place at the moment
b) States event that are taking place in the near future
c) State plans for the future
d) State the changes that occur at this time.
3. Characteristics
a) Sentence predicate in the tence form often use present participle or
V-ing
b) Present continuous tense is used to express actions that are taking
place now or plans for the future.
c) Present continuous tense for actions in the form of dynamic or action
verbs, not stative verb.

a) Verbal present continuous tense
- (+) : subject + be (am/is/are) + V-ing + complement
Ex : he is reading a book, I am going to school
- (-) : Subject + be (am/is/are) + not reading + complement
Ex : he is not reading a book, I am not going to school
- (?) : be (am/is/are) + Subject + V-ing + complement + ?
Ex : is he reading a book?, am I going to school?
b) Nominal present continuous tense
- (+) : subject + be (am/is/are) + being + complement
Ex : I am being so happy at present
- (-) : subject + be (am/is/are) + not being + complement
Ex : I am not being happy at present
- (?) : be (am/is/are) + subject + being + complement + ?
Ex : am I being happy at present?

CLOSING
A. Conclusion
1. Present tense and present continuous tense are sentences that are both used
in the present time, but there are differences sentences, that the present
tense is used for habits that are carried out repeatedly, while the present
continuous tense is used for events that are experienced now.
2. The use of verbs in the present tense and present continuous tense is also
different, where the present tense uses the verb-1 while the present
continuous tense uses the V-ing.
3. The formula in these two sentence is also divided in to two parts, that is,
verbal and nominal, where verbal tense is a tense that contains verbs,
while nominal is does not contain vebs
B. Suggestion
Paying attention to each sentence using language is very important to maintain
grammar and avoid misunderstandings from listeners. With this paper, we
hope that readers can study every knowledge contained in it. Hopefully this
paper can help all friends in understanding and learning English.
