Assignment 4

OBJECTIVE: To Set up a Hierarchical Network of a


University Campus with facilities for Mail, Web Brows-
ing, FTP
The Beauxbaton University is large, with two campuses located 20 miles apart. It comprises
four faculties: Health and Sciences, Business, Engineering/Computing, and Art/Design.
Each member of staff is equipped with a PC, and students have access to PCs in the labs.
Design a network topology that includes the key components needed to support the following:
• University Campus:

Main Campus
– Building A: Administrative staff in the departments of management, HR
and finance. The admin staff PCs are distributed in the building offices and
it is expected that they will share some networking equipment (Hint: use of
VLANs is expected here). The Faculty of Business is also situated in this
building.
– Building B: Faculty of Engineering and Computing and Faculty of Art and
Design.
– Building C: Students’ labs and IT department. The IT department hosts
the University Web server and other servers - There is also an email server
hosted externally on the cloud.
Smaller campus
Faculty of Health and Sciences (staff and students’ labs are situated on separate
floors)

• Each department/faculty is expected to be on its own separate IP network.

• The switches should be configured with appropriate VLANs and security settings.
Do the following:
1. Creating a network topology using Cisco Packet Tracer with a Hierarchical Design.

2. Connect Networking devices with Correct cabling.

3. Create VLANs and assigning ports VLAN numbers.

4. Implement Subnetting and IP Addressing.

Submit a detailed report (not more than 1500 words) on

1. The network topology, including but not limited to,

(a) the hierarchical system design,


(b) the types of nodes used,
(c) the different server nodes corresponding to the different application layer proto-
cols,
(d) the assignment of IP addresses (subnetting),
(e) the cable connections used (wired/wireless, gigabit/fast ethernet) etc,
(f) whether or not you have used a Layer 3 switch, how it is different from a router,
(g) what are the type of interfaces that you have used (serial or parallel)

2. Screenshot of the network topology highlighting nodes, type of nodes, IP addresses,


connections.
