How to Order charts-

1. get arrival/departure ports' position from Norie's Nautical Table

2. Make a rough route on ECDIS and export this route in any USB
3. Now Insert the USB in planning station computer
4. Import the route in planning station and then it will show all the charts which comes under this
route. Select the charts which you require.
5. Select Order option and and send the request
6. you will get charts permission or licence from service provider
7. Export the permit les in the USB
8. Put the USB in ECDIS and also Base DVD
9. Import the chart data in ECDIS.

How to make passage plan on ECDIS-

1. Once you have installed the charts now start passage planning that have Appraisal, Planning,
Execution, Monitoring

2. Appraisal -
Gather the information available from all relevant sources concerning the voyage from berth to berth.
look in the admiralty digital catalogue and nd out which publication and which volume is applicable
for our route such as
radio and weather station
sailing direction volume
tide table, routinbg charts, ocean passage of the world,Marpol

3. Planning -
laid out the courses on charts having consideration of IALA Boyage, wreck , weather, tra c, UKC, tidal
condition and CATZOC
Set the XTD as per the sea area and tra c
Make sure you're using appropriate scale while planning the route
Mark the brief notation on the charts such as
No go areas
speed / course alteration
radio calling point
MARPOL restrictions
Ballast water exchange
Parallel Index
Time Zones
Bridge manning
pilot station
anchorage area
Position plotting interval
Compare with Visual sight etc.
mark any low pressure area you're going to encounter
also set the sea area in SatC for EGC warning, navtex stations and weather facsimile.
Set the safety settings on ECDIS-
Shallow contour- 11m( v/l deepest static draft)
Safety Depth - 12.5 m ( deepest dynamic draft- tide )
Safety Contour- 15m ( ECDIS will automatically select as per your safety Depth)
Deep contour 25m ( 2X Deepest dynamic draft)
after this select check route on ECDIS it will automatically go through the entire passage plan and will
show if any error.
double check ETA/ETD and tidal times
Execution -
The voyage can be started
the PPI can be xed to a desired interval as required.
Speed adjust as pe ETA and as per safety of the vessel

Monitor -
Close and continues monitoring of the ship's progress along the pre planned track
ECDIS will give alarm when a vessel moves outside the channel limits or XTD and when nearing the
waypoint.
ECDIS will give alarm when a vessel is goint to cross the safety contour set on display. this is an
early alarm and will sound before the alarm set for safety Contour. this is early warning.
to enable this alarm a watch vector ( time and angle) must be de ned by the o cer.
The entire voyage can be saved and sent to any authority requiring it for investigation.
SCAMIN (Scale Minimum)

SCAMIN is an attribute allocated to features within an ENC. It de nes the minimum (smallest) scale at
which the feature will be displayed in an ECDIS. SCAMIN is used to signi cantly reduce the amount of
information and therefore clutter on the ECDIS display when reducing the viewing scale of an ENC (i.e.
displaying the ENC at a smaller scale than the compilation scale).

Every object on an ENC has a SCAMIN value attributed to it. When the display scale is set to a scale
smaller than an object’s SCAMIN value, the object will disappear. This can result in a navigational
danger being missed

Where the ECDIS allows the selection of SCAMIN o /on:

The system must be set to operate with SCAMIN OFF for appraisal, planning and review phases to
ensure all information is seen.

SCAMIN should be selected on for execution and monitoring of the voyage plan in order to reduce
the e ects of an over-crowded display

Note: Always visually check passage plans at ENC original chart scale (1:1) / compilation scale before
use.
Caution: ENCs viewed at too large a scale (over-scale) su er from distortion. An over-scaled ENC also
reduces the amount of useful chart information displayed ahead of the vessel.
