Concepts

Numbers

▪ All the natural numbers which are divisible by 2 are even numbers. Even numbers are represented
as 2n, where n is an integer.
▪ All the natural numbers which are not a multiple of 2 are odd numbers. Odd numbers are
represented as 2n – 1, where n is an integer.
▪ Observations about even and odd numbers:

odd ± odd = even

odd ± even = odd
even ± even = even
odd × odd = odd
odd × even = even
even × even = even

▪ All the natural numbers that have exactly two distinct factors i.e. 1 and number itself are prime
numbers.
▪ Every prime number greater than 3 can be represented as either 6n – 1 or 6n + 1, where n is a
natural number, but the converse is not true i.e. every number of the above mentioned forms is
not a prime number.
▪ There are 25 prime numbers from 1 to 100.
▪ 2 is the only prime number which is even.
▪ A natural number is a prime if it is not divisible by any prime number which is less than or equal to
the square root of the number.
▪ ab = 10a + b, where ab is a two-digit number; abc = 100a + 10b + c, where abc is a three-digit
number.
▪ ab + ba = (10a + b) + (10b + a) = 11(a + b) i.e. the sum of a two-digit number and the number
formed by interchanging its digits is always divisible by 11.
▪ ab – ba = (10a + b) –(10b + a) = 9(a – b) i.e. the difference of a two-digit number and the
number formed by interchanging its digits is always divisible by 9.

Factors

▪ Factors (divisors) of a number are the numbers which divide the number completely.
▪ Prime factorization is the process of expressing a composite number as a product of its prime
factor(s).
a p  bq  c r
▪ If N = , where a, b, c,… are prime numbers such that a < b < c …, then

• Number of factors of N = (p + 1) × (q + 1) × (r + 1) × …;
• Number of even factors of N = p × (q + 1) × (r + 1) × … if a = 2;
• Number of even factors of N = 0 if a ≠ 2;
• Number of odd factors of N = 1 × (q + 1) × (r + 1) × …

Cyclicity

▪ The cyclicity of unit digits 0,1, 5 and 6 is 1.

▪ The cyclicity of unit digits 4 and 9 is 2.
▪ The cyclicity of unit digits 2, 3, 7 and 8 is 4.
▪ When a natural number A ends with 0, Ak will always end with 00, where k is a natural number
greater than 1.
Step Up Learning Solutions QAHO-01

▪ When a natural number A ends with 5, Ak will always end with 25, where k is a natural
number greater than 1.

LCM & HCF

▪ HCF of two or more numbers is the greatest number which completely divides the numbers.
In other words, it is the greatest factor common to the numbers.
▪ The LCM of two or more numbers is the least number which is divisible by all the numbers.
