Collecting information
Flaxseed (LINUM USITATISSIUM) is belonging to family LINEACEA. This review summarizes the
information about the phytochemistry, pharmacological activity and toxicity of Flaxseeds. Flaxseeds have
many benefits such as healthy skin, hair growth, weight loss, lower cholesterol, act as a antioxidants ,etc.

Flaxseeds are also called as Alsi, Jawas, Aksebija in Indian languages The lignan content in flaxseed is
significantly higher than any other plants. This herbs is known as one of the best dietary sources of
Omega-3 fatty acids and lignan. The review focuses on health benefit of flaxseed and food applications to
make people aware about it.

The work in this review focuses that flaxseed has nutritional and functional properties. country of
practical properties, flaxseed includes low portions of unfavorable healthful compounds inclusive of
cadmium, cyanogenic glycosides, inhibitors of trypsin which might be typically eliminated via thermal
and mechanical processes, consisting of cooking in microwaves, autoclaving and boiling.
These review focuses on the recent data on flaxseed and its beneficial effects .Flaxseed is an annual
herb. It is a seed from the flax plant. flaxseed has high content of omega-3, omega-6 rich oil, alpha-
linolenic acid, lignans, etc.In year 2013-2014,Canada was world’s largest producer of flax about 614,000
metric tonnes of flaxseed.

The review focuses on the benefits of administering flaxseed or the individual bioactive
component on health and disease.flaxseed contain both soluble and insoluble fibres. Half an
ounce of dry flax provides 20% to 25% of your daily fiber needs.
PHARMACOGNOSY
TAXONOMY :
Flaxseed is the seed from the flax plant belonging to family linaceae
It is annual herb.
Classification of Flaxseed :
Vernacular name of flaxseed:
1. Improve Hearth Health: It helps lower blood pressure and it may slow the progression of
atherosclerosis
2. Protect against Cancer: flaxseed show beneficial affect against prostate, lung, colon, ovary,
and liver cancer
3. Enhance the hair length
4. Flaxseed help for weight loss
5. High in omega 3 fatty acids- It contains high alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), a type of omega 3
fatty acids. That help to reduce inflammation and prevent cholesterol from being deposited in
your hearts blood vessels.
6. Rich in fiber Flaxseed contain two types of fiber Soluble and insoluble. Soluble fiber slow
down digestion, which may help to regulate blood glucose levels and lower cholesterol.
Insoluble fiber adds bulk to stool , which may prevent constipation and promote bowel
movement
Pharmacological Activity of flaxseed
1. Antiarrhythmic Effects
2. Antidiabetic Effects
3. Antioxidant Effects
4. Anticoagulant and Antiplatelet Effects
5. Antineoplastic Effects
6. Hormonal Effects
7. Antilipidemic Effects
Antiarrhythmic Effects:
Flaxseed contains the high amount of Omega 3 fatty acids.
Higher intake of dietary linolenic acid Reduce the risk of Arrhythmia.
Antidiabetic Effects:
Flaxseed and flaxseed oil boast many health promoting compounds with the potential to lower
blood sugar level and delay the development of type 2 diabetes
Flaxseed are rich In fiber, omega 3 fatty acids And unique plant components they may improve
blood sugar control , insulin sensitivity.
Antioxidant Effects:
Secoisolariciresinol diglycoside (SDG), a plant lignan found in flaxseed, has been found to possess
antioxidant properties.
Flaxseed may increase lipid peroxidation and thus may increase oxidative injury.
Anticoagulant and Antiplatelet Effects:
Flaxseed oil decrease collagen stimulated platele aggregation and bleeding time .
Use of flaxseed supplement also decrease thrombinstimulated platele aggregation.
Antineoplastic Effects:
flaxseed was one of the most commonly used products for treating breast cancer.
The amount of lignan production in processed foods is generally dependent on the percent of
flaxseed within the product.
several researchers noted that the breast cancer- modulating effects of
phytoestrogens are dependent both on the background diet, genetic makeup, and on the timing of
exposure in the life cycle.
Hormonal Effects:
Flaxseed (not flaxseed oil) is a rich source of plant lignans.
It has been proposed that flaxseed and its lignans have potent antiestrogenic effects on estrogen
receptor-positive breast cancer.
Enterlactone and enterodiol (metabolized from flaxseed in the bowel) may decrease cell proliferation
and inhibit aromatase, 5-alpha- reductase, and 17-betahydroxysterioid dehydrogenase activity, which
may offer a reduction in the risk of breast, prostate and other hormone sensitive cancers.
Antilipidemic Effects:
It has been reported that defatted flaxseed (equivalent to the fiber component of flaxseed) can
significantly reduce levels of total cholesterol and low-density lipoproteins (LDL), and triglycerides.
The fiber portion of flaxseed has been proposed to exert lipid-lowering effects by enhancing gastric
emptying time, altering transit time, interfering with bulk-phase diffusion of fat and increasing
excretion of bile acids.
