IST TERM EXAMINATION | 2023/2024 ACADEMIC SESSION
SUBJECT: ENGLISH LANGUAGE | CLASS: SS1 Section A: Continuous Writing 1. In not less than two hundred words, write an essay on the topic, ‘The Day I will Never Forget'. Section B: Comprehension Passage Instruction: Read the comprehension passage and answer the questions that follow. ‘Falta' he would say to me, ‘what is the use of sending a female child to school? If she turns out well, the man she marries gets the benefit of her education. If she gets spoilt in the school, I get the blame. It’s my name that gets dragged through the mud. It’s my house that becomes her refuge. Whichever way you look at it, the father of a female child is the loser. Let the girls stay at home and help their mother, when it is time for them to marry, let them marry.' 'What for?' he would inquire angrily, 'If I had sons now, my name would be carried from generation to generation, my wealth would multiply tenfold, but not so with daughters. They are consumers and they let other people consume your wealth. While your name dies out, the daughter continues the lifeline of another man in another family.' 'Does he still think the same way?' Nana asked anxiously. I don't think so. So many things have happened since then that I wonder if Dogo is now capable of any serious thoughts,' the woman replied thoughtfully. 'But let's get back to the story.' 'When Dogo's wife gave him his sixth daughter, Dogo took a second wife. She was the daughter of the village head, a few years younger than Dogo's third child. Dogo made no secret about the reason why he had to marry again and immediately relegated the first wife and her six daughters to the background. By now, the son, being the first child, had gone to the city to study. When the situation at home became unbearable, Adama and Talatu, the first two girls, went to live with their maternal grandmother. Dogo disowned the girls and built a wall between his hut and that of their mother. As far as Dogo was concerned, the first wife was no longer part of the family. She had to remain close to the family, however, for the sake of the children.
