§1 Problems
Problem 1.1. A homothety sends the point (3, 5) to (7, 11) and the point (2, 2) to (4, 2). What
is the scale factor?
Problem 1.2. (2016 AMC 10B) A dilation of the plane sends the circle of radius 2 centered
at A(2, 2) to the circle of radius 3 centered at A′ (5, 6). What distance does the origin O(0, 0),
move under this transformation?
Problem 1.3. (2011 AIME I) In triangle ABC, AB = 125, AC = 117, and BC = 120. The
angle bisector of angle A intersects BC at point L, and the angle bisector of angle B intersects
AC at point K. Let M and N be the feet of the perpendiculars from C to BK and AL,
respectively. Find M N .
Problem 1.4. (2007 AIME II) Four circles ω, ωA , ωB , and ωC with the same radius are drawn
in the interior of triangle ABC such that ωA is tangent to sides AB and AC, ωB to BC and
BA, ωC to CA and CB, and ω is externally tangent to ωA , ωB , and ωC . If the sides of triangle
ABC are 13, 14, and 15, the radius of ω can be represented in the form m
n , where m and n are
relatively prime positive integers. Find m + n.
Problem 1.5. (2018 AIME II) Octagon ABCDEF GH with side lengths AB = CD = EF =
GH = 10 and BC = DE = F G = HA = 11 is formed by removing four 6 − 8 − 10 triangles
from the corners of a 23 × 27 rectangle with side AH on a short side of the rectangle, as shown.
Let J be the midpoint of HA, and partition the octagon into 7 triangles by drawing segments
JB, JC, JD, JE, JF , and JG. Find the area of the convex polygon whose vertices are the
centroids of these 7 triangles.

Problem 1.6. (Aditya Ghosh) Three circles of equal radius have a common point O and lie
inside a given triangle. Each circle touches a pair of sides of the triangle. Prove that the incenter
and the circumcenter of the triangle are collinear with O.

Problem 1.7. (EGMO Lemma 4.33) Let A and B be two points on circle Ω. Let ω be a smaller
circle tangent to chord AB at K and internally tangent to Ω at T . Prove that ray T K intersects
circle Ω at the midpoint M of the arc AB not containing T .

Problem 1.8. (Nine-Point Circle, EGMO Lemma 3.11, Important!!) Let △ABC be a triangle
with circumcenter O and orthocenter H, and denote by N9 the midpoint of OH. Then, show
that the midpoints of AB, BC, CA, AH, BH, CH and the feet of the altitudes of △ABC lie on
a circle centered at N9 . What is the radius of said circle?

Problem 1.9. (EGMO Lemma 3.9) Use a negative homothety to show that the centroid of a
triangle divides the median into a ratio of 2/1.

Problem 1.10. (EGMO Lemma 3.13) For a triangle ABC, show that the circumcenter O, the
centroid G, and the orthocenter H lie on a line (in other words, that they are collinear). In
addition, show that G divides OH into a ratio of 2/1.
