Scientific Notation WS
Scientific Notation WS
1) First, define what each of the following terms means about scientific notation.
Big: Numbers far from zero
Small: Numbers less than zero.
Long: Something that takes up a lot of space in terms of length.
Short: Something that takes up a less space in terms of length.
Base Number: Something that is raised to the power of a number.
Lead Number: Number in front of the dot
Expansion: Converting a number from scientific notation to standard notation
Compression: To compress large or small numbers from standard notation into scientific
notation.
Compression:
Step 1: Count the number of spaces the decimal will need to move in order to be just to
the right of the lead number and make note of the direction. (tip: if there is no decimal
place, it is implicitly to the right of the last zero)
Step 2: Get rid of the zeros that are not part of the base number. Replace them with
“x10”.
Step 3: put the exponent above the 10 equal to the number of spaces moved. Make it
positive if the decimal had to move to the left and negative if it had to move to the right.
