1.

The natural numbers 1, 2, 3, … are written, in a clockwise direction, on a circular grid as shown in
the diagram.
There are four numbers in each ring.
The numbers 1, 2, 3, and 4 are in the first ring.
The numbers 5, 6, 7 and 8 are in the second ring.
The following numbers fill up the other rings in the same way.
(a) Write down the numbers in the fourth ring.
(b) Write down the largest number in the tenth ring
(c) The sum, Sn, of the four numbers in the nth ring, where n = 1, 2 and 3, is given in the table
below.

(i) Write down the value of S4.


(ii) Find, in its simplest form, an expression, in terms of r, for Sr.
(iii) In which ring is the sum of the four numbers equal to 1018
Answers: (a) (13), 14, 15, 16; (b) 40; (c)(i) 58, (ii) 16r – 6, (iii) 64th.
2. Bob makes fences using identical metal rods one metre long.
The rods are bolted together at their ends.
Some fences, with different lengths, are shown below.

The table shows the numbers of bolts and rods used for various lengths of fence.

(a) Write down the values of p and q.


(b) Given that B = 3n + k, where k is a constant, find the value of k.
(c) Find an expression for R in terms of n.
(d) Bob has 200 bolts and 400 rods.
How many complete fences can he make which have a length of 6 m
Answers: (a) p = 14, q = 27; (b) 2; (c) 7n – 1; (d) 9.
3. Three integers, a, b and c, are such that a < b < c.
The three integers are said to form a Pythagorean Triple if c2 = a2 + b2 or c2 – b2 = a2.
For example
3, 4, 5 form a Pythagorean Triple because 52 – 42 = (5 – 4)(5 + 4) = 1 × 9 = 9 = 32
and 5, 12, 13 form a Pythagorean Triple because 132 – 122 = (13 – 12)(13 + 12) = 1 × 25 = 25 = 52.
(a) In the same way, show that 7, 24 and 25 form a Pythagorean Triple.
(b) Form a Pythagorean Triple
(i) in which the last two integers are 40 and 41,
(ii) in which the first integer is 11.
(c) (i) Simplify (n + 1)2 – n2.
(ii) Hence form a Pythagorean Triple in which the first integer is 101.
(d) It is also possible to form Pythagorean Triples in which the last two integers differ by 2.
For example
8, 15, 17 form a Pythagorean Triple because 172 – 152 = (17 – 15)(17 +15) = 2 × 32 = 64 = 82.
(i) Copy and complete the following statements:
… , 35, 37 form a Pythagorean Triple because 372 – 352 = ( )( ) = ..... × ..... = ..... = ..... .
16, … , … form a Pythagorean Triple because ..... – ..... = ( )( ) = 2 × ..... = ..... = 162.
(ii) Simplify (4n2 + 1)2 – (4n2 – 1)2 and hence express it as a perfect square.
(iii) Form a Pythagorean Triple in which the first integer is 400 and the other two integers
differ by 2.

5. A series of diagrams, using three types of triangle, is shown below.


The triangles are grey, white or black.

The table below shows the numbers of each type of triangle used in the diagrams.

(b) By considering the number patterns in the table, find, in terms of n, expressions for
x, y and z.

6. The diagram shows the first four rows of a pattern of numbers.

(a) Find the values of p, q, r and s.


(b) Find expressions, in terms of n, for x, y and z.
(c) Write down the middle number in Row 101.
Answers: (a) p = 11, q = 30, r = 60, s = 6; (b) x = 2n + 1, y = n(n + 1), z = 2n (n + 1); (c) 102.

7. (a) The first four terms of a sequence, S, are 89, 83, 77, 71.
(i) Find an expression for Sn , the nth term of this sequence.
(ii) Find the smallest value of n for which Sn < 0.
(b) The nth term of a different sequence, T, is given by Tn = n2 – 4n
(i) Find and simplify an expression for
(ii) The difference between T p +1 and Tp is 75.
Find the value of p.

8. The first term of a sequence is 13.
The following terms are found by alternately adding 4 and 6 to the previous term.

(a) Write down the next two terms of the sequence.
(b) Write down the value of the term that is closest to 999.
(c) Write down the difference between the values of the 91st and 93rd terms.
(d) Find the 80th term.
(e) The nth term is 203.
Find n.

9. The first four lines of a pattern of numbers are shown below.

(a) Write down the 7th line of the pattern.
