Course Description
In Introduction to Engineering Design (IED) students are introduced to the engineering design process,
applying math, science, and engineering standards to identify and design solutions to a variety of real-world
problems. They work both individually and in collaborative teams to develop and document design solutions
using PLTW Engineering Notebooks and 3D modeling software.

o Design Team
o Design Challenges
Grading
Students will be exposed to various forms of research and practices. Students will be completing these tasks
through tests, homework assignments, projects, etc. An average of cumulative points will be compiled and
follow the grading guidelines directed by the district administration.
93-100 = A
86-92 = B
76-85 =C
70-75 = D
69-Below = F
Assignments and resources can be found on Schoology. Grades with feedback can also be found there. The
online gradebook for the school will be updated regularly to reflect student grade.
Teacher Electronic Communications
Students at Cumberland Valley have a wide variety of different tools that can be used to communicate with
teachers. The preferred method of communication is through email. Students are suggested to use the
Cumberland Valley Gmail accounts. Students may elect to utilize their personal emails, but they may be
blocked by the district. Schoology Messenger can be utilized, but it is not actively monitored or prioritized as a
communication means.
Late Policy
Late work policy based on levels (AP/Honors, Level 2, Level 3).
1) AP/Honors Courses a) Late Work Window: Not to exceed two (2) school days b) Maximum Grade for Late
Work: 80%
2) Level 2 Courses + Elective Courses a) Late Work Window: Not to exceed one (1) calendar week b)
Maximum Grade for Late Work: 80%
3) Level 3 Courses a) Late Work Window: Not to exceed two (2) calendar weeks b) Maximum Grade for Late
Work: 80%
Tests, quizzes, and small daily assignments graded for completion are not included in the late work policy.
Teacher discretion and flexibility are permitted for extenuating student circumstances.
Absence
Students are responsible for making any missing work that occurs when the student is not present. Students
will simply ask what they have missed and what they need to make up. Students are expected to make up the
assignment in conjunction with the number of days missed. The teacher is not responsible for seeking the
student out for missing content or assignments. If a student has prior knowledge that they are not going to be
present, the student is responsible for asking and picking up materials for when they are going to be absent.
Students are responsible for submitting the assignments upon their return.
Expectation/ Rules
Students are expected to show up on time and prepared to work at the beginning of the class period.
Students are also expected to bring all necessary tools and materials to class with them. This class will contain
project-based assessments, so participation is not on a voluntary basis. Students are expected to be
productive and participate. Electronic devices may be used at appropriate times when directed. Additionally,
this class has lab components where respect is not only expected but is essential. Respect should not only be
between student and teacher, but also towards peers, materials, and tools.
