Events Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity

Gain attention Good morning, class! Good morning!

How are you doing? (Fist bumps the air)
Can you fist bump the air to show you
are ready?
That’s great.

Before we begin our class, can you

please lead us in prayer, _____? _____ leads the prayer.

Let me check your attendance, say

‘present’ when your name is called. (Students say present as the teacher calls
in their name.)
Alright! I want all of you guys to watch
the short video on screen and take (Students watch the video)
note of all the events happening.
(Teacher presents the video)

So, what happened to Jake? And what

did he do? “Jake had problems while preparing for his
date, he used aftershave instead of
mouthwash”
That’s right. So, this video shows
unfortunate event that happened to
Jake while he was preparing for his
date. I believe we all can relate to him,
right? Things don’t always go as
planned.

Inform students The video we watched is actually

of objectives
related to our topic today.
Specifically, by the end of this class the
students will be able to:

- identify the forms of verbs in

past and past perfect tense;
- indicate past actions using the
past and past perfect tenses of
the verb;
- and, use the past and perfect
tenses correctly in different
contexts
Recall prior Before we begin our lesson, let’s have
learning
a quick recap of our previous topic,
Direct and Indirect Speech.

What have you learned from our Direct speech reproduces exact words of
previous topic? the speaker. There is no change in the
words spoken and it is enclosed in
quotation marks.

Indirect speech gives the idea of a

speaker’s message, these are paraphrased
versions of the spoken words and are not
enclosed in quotation marks”

That’s actually very good!

In this sentence, “What does it take to

become a great leader?” the young
girl asked. Is it a direct speech or an
indirect speech?

Correct

What about this sentence, The

lecturer said that everybody can
become a leader, in their own ways.

It seems that you understand the topic

direct and indirect speech. Now let us
proceed to our next topic which is the
Past and Past Perfect Tense.

random-picker-wheel

What have you observed from our

activity?

Very good observation class! In past tense, the verbs end in -d or -ed,
While, in the Past Perfect tense it uses the
word had before the past participle.

Present the Past Tense is used to talk about

stimulus
actions that happened or was
completed in the past.

Past tense of regular verbs is formed

by adding a -d or an -ed at the end of
the word.

Play – played type - typed

Listen – listened push - pushed
Love – loved

Irregular verbs are either transformed

entirely, changed partially, or stay the
same.

Put – put cut - cut

Set – set cost – cost
See – saw build – built
Go – went do – did
Rise – rose
The past perfect tense is also used to
talk about things that happened in the
past.
However, past perfect tense conveys
that a past action happened before
another past action started. The past
perfect tense structure requires the
use of auxiliary verb had to appear
before the past participle of a verb,
such as

had given
had taken
had prayed

Remember that the event that

happened first uses the past perfect
tense, while the event that happened
after is expressed in past tense.
Examples of Past Tense:
1. Whiskey bottles seemed part of
the American uniform.
2. I poured some of my drink on
the bamboo floor.
3. It went through the slits.
4. I noticed that he was beaded
with perspiration.

Examples of Past Perfect Tense:

1. Joe had unbuttoned his collar
before he took another swig of
Lambanog.
(Joe decided to first unbutton his shirt.
When the unbuttoning was done, he
drank some more lambanog.)
2. The Filipino farmer gave the
American soldier a calamansi he
had sliced in half.
(The calamansi was already cut in had
before the Filipino handed it to the
America.)
