EN10G-Ig-3.6: Use modals

1. Choose the appropriate modal to complete a sentence.


2. Cite the importance of using modals in the sentence.
3. Rephrase sentences using the appropriate modal.

II. EXPLANATION/DISCUSSION
MODALS

MODALS are special kind of auxiliary or helping verbs. It is a verb that cannot work
without another verb.

USES OF MODALS:

To express:
Ability
Obligation
Necessity
Willingness
Permission

EXPRESSING ABILITY
CAN
Can is used most often and most literally to express when a person or thing is physically,
mentally, or functionally able to do something.
For example:
“John can run faster than anyone I know.”
“We don’t have to stay—we can leave if you want to.”
“I don’t think he can read.”
“Just do the best you can.”
“When can you start?”
EXPRESSING OBLIGATION
MUST
To express obligation or duty
Example:
This also refers to laws and regulations.
I must memorize all of these rules about modal verbs.
People must remain seated until the show is over.
You must wear a seatbelt at all times.
EXPRESSING NECESSITY
NEED TO
Need as a main verb is followed by a to-infinitive and expresses that something is necessary. It
can be used in affirmative, negative and interrogative sentences:
Do you have a minute? I need to talk to you about something.
I don't need to be told that I should lose weight.
Do you need to use the hairdryer?
If you want good results, you will need to work harder.
EXPRESSING WILLINGNESS
"Will" is a modal verb used with promises or voluntary actions that take place in the future.
Examples:
I promise that I will write you every single day. promise
I will make dinner tonight (voluntary action).
GIVING/ASKING PERMISSION
MAY
For example:
You may leave the table now that you're finished with your dinner.
You may drive my car.
May I borrow your eraser?
May I make a phone call?

e. Which one of the pair expresses willingness?
i. I can dispose the garbage.
ii. I will do my homework.
f. Which one of the pair expresses ability?
i. He can speak several languages.
ii. He may speak to the boss.
g. Which one of the pair expresses necessity?
i. You must attend the meeting.
ii. I need to go to the comfort room.
h. Which one of the pair expresses an obligation?
i. We should go out for a drink.
ii. We must get out of the building.

IV. EVALUATION
Direction: Construct a sentence using the appropriate modal to respond to the
following situation:
1. It is getting late, but you are still at your friend’s house. You want to use the
phone to inform your mother.
