Alexander Graham Bell was a famous inventor. He was born in
Edinburgh, Scotland in 1847. Like his father, Bell was a teacher. In 1870 he
started research on sending sound over a wire. In 1876, he sent the first
message over a telephone. Bell changed the world with his invention. He
died at his home in Canada in 1922.
Frida Kahlo (artist) was born in Mexico in 1907. She started painting after
she was hurt in a bus accident and was soon one of Mexico’s most famous
artists. She died in 1954 after many years of health problems.
Captain Cook was born in 1728 in Marton, England. He was an explorer
who sailed most of the South Pacific. He was famous for his navigating and
map-making skills. Cook was killed by the natives of the Hawaiian Islands in
1779.
Marie Curie was a famous scientist. She was born in Warsaw Poland in
1867. She made history in 1903 when she became the first woman to win
the Nobel prize for physics for her work on radioactivity alongside her
husband Pierre Curie. She died in 1934.
Steve Jobs was born in Wisconsin, USA in 1955. He was an entrepreneur,
inventor and co-founder of Apple computers, which developed a series of
revolutionary technologies: the iPod, the iPhone and the iPad. He died in
2011.
Abdul Rahman Al-Sudais (reciter) was born in 1961 in Qassim, Saudi
Arabia. He memorized the Qur’an at the age of 12, and went on to study
Shari‘ah at different universities like Umm Al-Qura University, Makkah. In
1984, when he was just 24 years old, Al-Sudias became the youngest Imam
in the history of Masjid Al-Haram. His first prayer as Imam was the Asar of
22 Shaban 1404 Hijri. Now, after forty years of service, he is the Chief of the
Imams at the Grand Mosque of Makkah. He is famous throughout the Muslim
world for his emotional and grand style of recitation.
Homework: 1) Think of five famous people in your country. What are their
professions? (Do in your notebook). Write short sketches about them.
Include their important dates and place of birth/death, and other
information.
2) Write the meanings of entrepreneur, inventor, explorer.
