Mason ivid strokes of color and imaginative prints bedeck every inch of Ferrick Mason's Versailles, Kentucky, showroom, courtesy of Alex Mason's dreamy ‘gouache and ink illustrations printed on fabrie, furniture, and wallpaper But the brand and its cofounder weren't always based in this laid-back town. After years spent putting her paintbrush to paper in numerous states and countries, the Kentucky native came home and brought Ferrick Mason with her, entering a new era of success, Apainter sinee childhood, Alex's world expanded by leaps and bounds when her artistic ambitions took her across the country and beyond. Initially, she worked toward a fine arts degree 13 SOUTHERNLADYMAGAZINE.COM in1989 at the University of Southern California. “It was culture shock for me, coming from Lexington, Kentucky, which was pretty small back then,” she says. She transferred to the University of, ‘Vermont to finish her bachelor’s degree ‘and then moved to New York and earned a master's degree in painting from Brooklyn's esteemed Pratt Institute. While there, Alex fellin ove with her future husband. When he took a job working on The Lord of the Rings films in New Zealand, she joined him as she pursued her own career. “Thad an art show there, and people kept saying my paintings would lend themselves to textiles, which had never erossed my mind before,” she says, Alex's bold designs recast fami ‘motifs in eclectic palettes and styles. Meandering brushstrokes form playful stripes, while unfussy daubs of color and serawled outlines comprise lively florals. “Sometimes, [like to Introduce something erazy and experimental with color,” says Alex. “T think that’s really fun, too." The duets of unexpected hues prompt delightful results, from chartreuse leaves that dance alongside violet blossoms to chinoiserie dragons sketched in shades of pink and tea. Once Alex's husband finished his work in New Zealand, they moved back to California, where she learned the William Morris method of creating repeatable patterns at the Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles. But ‘when she decided to launch her own textile ine, she didn’t know where to start, A friend suggested she connect with Brian Ferrick, a lngtime indus. try pro. “We met at his big printing facility, and we decided on the spot to become partners,” she recalls Combining their last names, they founded Ferrick Mason in 2008. ‘Although Alex had found her artistic niche in the world of interiors, relocating first to New Mexico and then to Australia made it difficult to sustain Ferrick Mason. *Itold my hus- band, ‘We have to save this business” says Alex, who returned to Los Angeles to reconnect with Brian andl streamline operations. They revived the brand, and when her family moved to the ‘South to be closer to loved ones in 2015, everything finally fell into place. After years away from home, settling in Versailles proved to be just what Alex and the brand needed. The inereasingly popular Bourbon Trail attracted visitors and new residents, enlivening the up-and-coming town, Alex and her husband transformed an 1890s storefront on Main Street that hhad been abandoned for 30 years into Ferrick Mason's first showroom, where wallpapers are printed to order in-house. “We could never have had a physical location in Los Angeles; it's so cost-prohibitive,” says Alex. “It helped the business turn around.” ‘Now carried in design showrooms nationwide, Alex’s artwork has made its way into hotels and houses in myriad states. Moving into their own home just two blocks away from the flagship, Alex and her husband, along with their children and dogs, have fully embraced the intimate atmosphere of Versailles. “There's something so great about being inasmall town and being able to walk to work,” she says noting that Brian has stepped away from the forefront ofthe brand, allowing its Kentucky home base to take center stage. Whether painting south of the equator or in Southern California, ‘Alex has always drawn from a wealth of global inspiration, But at its eore, the brand has carried a litte bit of the South wherever it's been, just like the artist herself, “The South is definitely more colorful. We love pattern, we love print, yet we're also more tradi- tional,” Alex says. “And I think all. that plays a part in Ferrick Mason.’ For info visit ferriekmason.com. 15 SOUTHERNLADYMAG: BAKING IN THE AMERICAN nne Byrn has long fostered a passion fr blending history withthe art of cooking. You'l also discover new perspectives on tasty classes. “I stum- bled across a 1908 recipe for banana pudding in an old Kentucky cookbook and learned that Mobile, Alabama, used to be a major port for bananas,” Anne says. “Because ofthe importance of railroads at that time, bananas were transported from South Alabama to Kentucky, a major railroad hub atthe time. [oved that, and I think it realy speaks to how diverse Southern baking is, We may think it's one thing, but itis actually incredibly diverse, depending onthe people who settled and the types of recipes they left behind.” ‘Anne added a few unconventional recipes, suchas cantaloupe eream pie from the 1950s and "60s. “Some ofthe ‘more difiealt recipes to develop were so unique Tcouldn't no put them in, like the cantaloupe cream pie, which was created by a railroad cook who was tasked with using up the ripe cantaloupe before it went to waste,” ‘Anne says. “I thought, ‘What ean I rake with that?” and its sueh a taste of summer. While we all have our standard favorites, I wanted to include some of the quirky recipes and untold stories as wel.” Asmuch as she focuses on the ‘South's passion for baking, Anne spotlights how the stories and recipes were developed and affected ‘the culture, in good times and bad. For example, the culinary traditions monumental in creating many iconic Southern dishes—from raising rice and sugarcane to baking and selling pound cakes during the Civil Rights Movement. “Southerners realize the impor- tance of food to connect us to each ‘other, but this book also shows the complicated history behind a lot of ‘these recipes,” Anne says. “If ever there was a time we needed better connection, it is right now. Having food is something we can all agree on, ‘and it's important to preserve our recipes because they have been preserved for us.” For information, visit annebyrn.com.
