Essay:
The curriculum approach that I believe has similarities to the Curriculum and Assessment Policy
Statement (CAPS) used in most South African classrooms is the Backward Design approach.
Backward Design is a curriculum planning method that involves setting learning goals before
choosing instructional methods and forms of assessment. This approach aligns with CAPS as
both emphasize setting clear learning outcomes and objectives at the forefront of the
curriculum development process. The focus on outcomes in both CAPS and Backward Design
ensures that teaching and assessment are purposeful and aligned with the desired learning
goals.
One of the key assumptions of the Backward Design approach is that learning experiences
should be designed with the end goals in mind. This means that educators using this approach
believe that effective teaching starts by identifying the desired results and then working
backward to plan learning activities that will help students achieve those results. Additionally,
Backward Design assumes that assessment should be an integral part of the curriculum
planning process, with assessments directly linked to the identified learning outcomes.
The curriculum implications for teachers and learners using the Backward Design approach are
significant. For teachers, this approach requires a deep understanding of the desired learning
outcomes and the ability to design learning experiences that will help students achieve those
outcomes. Teachers must also be skilled in creating assessments that accurately measure
student progress towards the established goals. For learners, the Backward Design approach
emphasizes clarity and transparency in learning objectives, helping students understand what is
expected of them and why they are learning specific content.
Implementing the Backward Design approach in my own subject would involve first identifying
the essential learning outcomes that I want my students to achieve. I would then design
learning activities and assessments that are aligned with these outcomes, ensuring that every
aspect of the curriculum is purposeful and focused on helping students reach the desired goals.
By implementing Backward Design, I would provide my students with a clear roadmap for their
learning journey, helping them understand the relevance of the content they are studying and
empowering them to take ownership of their learning
