Discussion
Product Familiarization
The ED-4 is manufactured by Vee Three, but it is only available through Cummins. The
ED-4 is compatible with both 12V DC and 24V DC systems.
• Transmits data onto the NMEA 2000 network (See Reference Section)
ED-3 Replacement
The ED-3 display will be obsolete by the supplier in 2021. In response to this, Cummins
Marine will be releasing the ED-4 on select engines currently available with an ED-3
and for the PT Basic Panel. This includes QSK and KTA series engines. For detailed
information on just the ED-3 display, refer to MAB No. 0.15.00-09/02/2004.
Unlike the ED-3 which supports J1587/J1708, the ED-4 does not support J1587/J1708.
Support for J1587/J1708 would require internal hardware change to the ED-4 but there
are no plans to make such a change. J1939 is supported by both ED-3 and ED-4. All
SPNs that were used in the ED-3 are supported in the ED-4. For more information on
the available monitoring parameters, see Table 2 of this document.
Figure 1 and Figure 2 provide an illustration of the cosmetic differences between the
ED-3 (left) and the ED-4 (right). While both devices look similar, they differ in
functionality and size. Information on ED-4 size and external architecture is provided in
the Installation section of this document.
Application
The Engine Room Panel is designed to have an integrated ED-4 for local monitoring as
indicated by Figure 3. The ED-4 can also be connected remotely on the helm to provide
further monitoring capability. Details on these connection points are described later in
this document.
• ED-4 (Figure 3)
• Panel Integrated with ED-4 (Figure 3)
Data Flow
The ED-4 transmits and receives data (push and pull) on the J1939 network. It can also
transmit data (push only) on the NMEA2000 (N2K) network. The ED-4 indicates engine
operating parameters and fault codes. It may be configured to serve as the gateway for
relaying engine ECM information to MFDs (Multi-Function Displays) via N2K. For more
information on N2K, see the Reference section.
J1939 Data
The ED-4 connects to the engine or generator ECM via the J1939 datalink (network).
The ED-4 monitors this data stream from the ECM and converts/displays data in textual
format. In addition, the ED-4 monitors the data stream for fault information detected by
the ECM and reported via the J1939 datalink. The ED-4 indicates active fault codes
while filtering out fault codes that are not applicable to marine installations.
It is imperative that the termination resistors are installed correctly. “Over termination”
and “under termination” BOTH result in intermittent or failed J1939 networks.
All electronically controlled engines ship from the factory with a J1939 termination
resistor (120 Ohm) on the engine harness. There is one (1) termination resistor per
engine that must be installed at the furthest end of the backbone (in addition to the
factory installed termination resistor at the engine). Figure 6 shows the J1939 helm
connection, weather cap, and termination resistor. Every J1939 connection should have
a weather cap installed if it is not located at the end of the backbone with a termination
resistor installed. Figure 7 shows the details of the termination resistor pin locations.
Note: If a third-party J1939 device(s) is connected to the network, the source address
claiming process for the ED-4(s) may be affected. This may cause information
mismatch. Please consult the AE for more details related to this type of application.
The ED-4 monitors and displays several engine parameters. Table 2 below shows the
J1939 parameter details used by the ED-4 for Cummins PSBU. Use this table as a
reference when selecting third party J1939 gauges or displays to ensure the correct
data is received. Not all third party J1939 gauges monitor the same parameters. The
appendix contains the supplemental bulletin number that shows some common J1939
gauges that have been tested with this system.
Installation
A paper mounting template designed for marking drill locations is supplied loose with
the ED-4 kit (Figure 8). After markings are made for the cutout, it is recommended that
the dimensions are verified by measurements to mitigate errors due to limitations in the
printing process. This is especially important if the template has been photocopied.
Caution: DO NOT use this Template for the installation of the ED-4 as it is for
dimensional reference, ONLY use the template supplied with the kit.
The ED-4 fasteners attach to the back of the unit. It is imperative that the ED-4 is
mounted in a location that will provide sufficient access for potential future service
events. The mounting hardware is supplied with every display and consists of (4) nylon
threaded M4 studs and (4) nylon thumb nuts (Figure 9).
It is critical that the ED-4 is installed only with the supplied hardware. Other fasteners
such as stainless-steel screws are not recommended and could possibly damage the
unit (the blind tapped holes are shallow and stainless-steel screws could “jack” or
separate the housing).
Installation Instructions:
• Decide on a location.
• Allow adequate clearance behind the display for mounting hardware access,
harness connection access and for ventilation.
• Make sure the harness is not excessively stressed.
Cummins Internal Use Only: This information is labeled per CORP-00-24-00-00.
.
• Provide sufficient harness slack [approximately 10-12 inches] so the display may
be removed for servicing.
• Leave sufficient clearance for access to the USB connection on the rear of the
display. (The USB connection is used to load software and vessel personality
files.)
• Cut and drill holes for the display.
• Screw in the nylon studs supplied to the rear case of the display (see Figure 10).
• Place the Cummins® ED4 Display in position and use the thumb nuts to secure
the unit. The thumb nuts should only be hand tight.
• Connect the harness plugs into the back housing.
Notes:
• Install the ED-4 “dry”. Do not use any type of adhesive, sealant, or caulk when
installing the ED-4. It has a built-in O-ring designed to provide a sufficient seal
against smooth mounting surfaces. For a complete waterproof seal, a custom
gasket may be installed (not provided by Cummins).
• The harness connectors (Primary and Secondary) are keyed and can only plug
into the correct connection on the ED-4.
• The ED4 is installed in the CIB from the factory and requires unique stainless-
steel fasteners that can be reused. These specific CIB fasteners have a
recommended torque value of 1.1 Nm (10 in-lb.).
• Compass safe distance is 61 cm (24 inches)
Connections
The electrical connections for the ED-4 are specific to the application. Figure 11 shows
the connections for the ED-4. The harnesses are keyed so the connectors can only be
inserted in the correct locations on the ED-4. These are Deutsch connectors and can be
disassembled without the need for special tools.
Ordering
The ED-4 can be ordered with an installation kit for mounting (Figure 12), like what was
provided with the ED-3. The installation kit includes a mounting bracket, terminal block
strip with a DIN rail mount and end blocks, 9 pin service connector, and short harness
connecting the ED-4 to the terminal strip.
The ED-4 ships from the factory with “blank” software and must be updated with the
most current version prior to operation. Vessel Personality Files (VPF’s or “settings
files”) are specific to each ED-4 relative to physical location and the data that may be
received/transmitted.
The VPF contains data and advanced-level system settings related to the internal
functions such as: sensor input, display messages, J1939 addresses, and NMEA 2000
(N2K) gateway details.
The VPF must be updated for each ED-4 application at initial installation by an AE,
OEM or by a technician during a service event.
All VPF’s are created by the factory group and are available on QuickServe. QuickServe
contains a variety of VPFs to satisfy different applications. It is very important that the
correct VPF is loaded on the intended ED-4. A VPF mismatch will cause errors and/or
loss of data.
Note: ED-4 display software, VPF library, VPF tracking tool, and VPF Selection Sheet
are all located on the Quickserve:
https://quickserve.cummins.com/qs3/qsol/service/marine/mpf_edd4.html
The current display software and VPF name/version can be found in the ED-4 “About”
menu screen (Figure 13):
The ED-4 Display software and vessel personality file must be installed and configured
prior to operation of the display. No special tools are required to perform these updates.
The files are transferred in this order:
Quickserve -> Desktop/Laptop Computer -> USB Memory Stick -> ED-4
VPFs are available for the K-Series (KTA19, KTA38, KTA50) and QSK (QSK19,
QSK38, QSK50, QSK60) Engines. Each VPF option is dependent upon the type of
engine configuration that the ED-4 is installed for. Refer to the QSOL page for all
available VPFs.
• USB stick body size max dimensions: 16.5mm x 12.7mm (0.65” x 0.5”)
• USB Storage capacity is 500MB minimum and 64GB maximum
• FAT32 format is preferred
• USB 2.0 and 3.0 formats are supported
Notes: Not all USB memory sticks physically fit into the ED-4 housing. The actual USB
port is the standard size, but the opening in the back of the ED-4 may physically restrict
the use of some USB drives.
Some USB Sticks are not electronically compatible with the ED-4. When this happens,
the ED-4 will not recognize and scan the USB. If the update does not install properly,
please try a USB stick from a different manufacturer.
If a USB Stick is found to cause errors, please let an AE in the Cummins Marine Group
in Charleston know the exact details about this issue (USB Stick manufacturer, model,
capacity, etc.).
Sometimes there may be trial and error involved to find a compatible USB drive
(physically and electronically).
Except for software or VPF loading events, the USB port must always be sealed with
weather cap to provide protection from the environment.
After a USB memory stick has been inserted into an ED-4, an error message may
appear every time thereafter the USB stick is connected to a Windows-based computer.
This is because the ED-4 uses a Linux kernel. Any time another operating system other
than Windows meets a USB stick, Windows will report an error the next time it is
connected. This is only a nuisance message and does not affect the functionality of the
USB stick. Click “Cancel” to ignore this message.
The ED-4 Software consists of a zip file that must be unpackaged either on a computer
or inside the USB stick.
For the VPF, it must be loaded in a top-level file named VPF, along with the other
software files. This is because the VPF is not part of the base software package. The
VPF(s) must be loaded into this VPF folder on the USB drive as a compressed zip file.
Up to (20) VPF’s total may be loaded into this folder.
In summary, the software files are in a zipped format on the INCAL drive and must be
unzipped prior to saving to the root directory of the USB stick. The WINZIP tool may not
function correctly and may result in partial unzipping. The standard Windows Explorer
extraction tool or WINRAR (available on Cummins Software Shelf) are recommended
for unzipping ED-4 software files. The VPF file must be stored in zipped format in a top-
level folder named VPF.
Procedure for unzipping the software package using the Windows Extractor:
1. Browse to location where the ED-4 zipped software is copied.
8. Once the installation is complete, the “new” software and VPF names can be verified
through the “About” screens.
Any time the software is updated, it is recommended that the VPF is downloaded from
the ED-4 to a USB stick first, as the current VPF will be erased during the software
update. Refer to Figure 18 for the steps to save/download a VPF from the ED-4 to a
USB stick.
Once a VPF has been loaded onto a new boat, some screens that are not applicable
(port vs starboard engine, etc.) must be hidden or “toggled” off in the menu. Once these
menus have been adjusted, the next step is for AE to export this custom VPF and name
it according to the convention.
Cummins Internal Use Only: This information is labeled per CORP-00-24-00-00.
.
The operation of loading a VPF will act as a “factory reset”. This holds true even if a
VPF is re-loaded that was previously installed. This may be useful if some of the deep-
level configuration settings are inadvertently changed.
Figure 17: ED-4 VPF Update Screen Flow Example (From USB Stick)
The software update process requires several minutes to complete. The VPF update
process also requires several minutes to complete. DO NOT remove the USB stick
during the software or VPF update process. Only remove the USB stick by first selecting
the Eject key after all downloading/uploading is complete.
Note: If a “blank” grey screen appears anytime during a software update, a recovery
process must be initiated. Please follow the steps below for the recovery process:
Recovery Process for ED-4:
Any time the software is updated (Figure 18), it is recommended that the VPF is
downloaded from the ED-4 to a USB stick first, as the current VPF will be erased during
the software update.
Figure 18: Steps to download a VPF from the ED-4 to a USB stick:
If these time intervals are exceeded without a confirmation prompt, please power-off the
system, remove the USB drive, and re-power the system. It is possible the software or
VPF was loaded successfully without prompting the user.
Operation
The ED-4 display provides engine and vessel information to the operator. The user can
interact with the display by pressing keys 1 through 5 on the front of the display (Figure
19). The function of each specific key changes depending on the screen displayed on
the ED-4.
A variety of engine and vessel data, fault / alarm codes, diagnostics, and configuration
setups can be viewed on the ED-4 display.
The ED-4 Display automatically powers ON when the system enable switch is in the
energized position. There is no dedicated power key on the ED-4. It is compatible with
both 12VDC and 24VDC voltage (10VDC-32VDC).
Note: The ED-4 may take up to 15 seconds to complete the power on sequence and
establish communication with other ED-4s in the system.
There are two primary data screens on the display. Primary data screens are within
Group 1 and contain the main/general engine and vessel parameters. These are the
screens that the typical operator will use during normal vessel operation. The following
list shows the data that is available in the primary data screens.
• Engine RPM
• Percent Load / Power
• Engine Oil Pressure
• Coolant Temperature
• Exhaust Gas Temperature
• Battery Voltage
• Fuel Rate (consumption)
• Engine Hours
To scroll to the next screen, press key 1 (Next). There is no “back” key, but multiple
presses of key 1 will scroll through the available screens and eventually show Screen 1
again.
Note: Dashed lines indicate data is not being received for the given parameter or the
vessel is not equipped to monitor it.
Group Functionality
Group functionality is used to separate primary data screens from all other data
screens. If the ED-4 screens are setup with multiple groups, then the Group button will
be active. Group 1 has two screens with general/main engine parameters that are the
primary data screens. Group 2 has more screens for additional engine monitoring
parameters (i.e. screens for fuel parameters, intake and exhaust parameters, oil and
coolant parameters, and propulsion parameters). Each parameter in Group 2 is
organized onto a screen according to its function. Parameters in Group 2 have more
screens that include all main engine/vessel parameters plus any other SPN that is
monitored on the system. If the user only wants to see the main engine parameters,
they will disable all screens in Group 2. To disable any screens within either Group,
follow the steps under Screen Configuration (Figure 25) in this document. By default, all
available screens appear on the ED-4 until the User disables any.
By clicking the Group button (Key 2) on the ED-4, the display switches to the screens in
the next Group (Figure 21). By default, the ED-4 screen starts at the first screen in
Group 1. As with scrolling through screens using the Next button, multiple presses of
Key 2 will scroll through the available groups and eventually show Group 1 again.
Demo Data
The ED-4 has a Demo Data mode feature. In this mode, the ED-4 broadcasts
“phantom” engine information. This function is only designed for demonstration or
testing purposes and should never be used while the engine is in operation.
Brightness
The backlight is adjustable. Starting from the primary data screen, the sequence is key
3 followed by key 3 or 4 (Figure 23). The brightness gauge shows the percentage of
current level of brightness. The adjustment range for brightness is 10% to 100%.
Figure 23: Brightness Level
Languages
The language capability of the ED-4 resides in the VPF. By default, all VPFs come with
4 language options: English, Spanish, Dutch, French. To change amongst these
languages, navigate to the Menu (Key 5). For additional language requests beyond the
default available, contact a Cummins AE representative.
Units
The units of the ED-4 can be changed. Refer to Figure 24 for instructions on how to
change the parameter units.
Figure 24: Unit Configuration
Screen Configuration
The Screen Configuration setting allows the operator to enable or disable specific data
screens (Figure 25). This is the process to disable screens that are not applicable.
For warning alarms, there will be a pop-up message and an audible alarm horn for 3
seconds. The pop-up message will provide a description of the fault along with
associated fault codes (Table 3)
For critical alarms, there will be a pop-up message and a repeating audible alarm horn
cycle for 15 seconds ON and 60 seconds OFF. This will be a repeating cycle until A) the
alarm is acknowledged or B) the active alarm becomes inactive. The pop-up message
will provide a description of the fault along with associated fault codes. (Table 3)
Critical alarms are classified as alarms requiring immediate action such as “Reduce
Engine Speed” or “Shut Down Engine”.
Diagnostic faults, which include maintenance and service alarms, do not appear as
standard alarms. There are no audible and active visual indications on the ED-4 with
diagnostic faults. These alarms only appear on the Advanced Alarms Screen.
The bell icon will represent the most severe active fault by color (Amber for Warning
and Red for Critical). For example: If there are ten active faults, one Critical fault and
nine Warning faults, the bell icon will appear Red in color. If all the active faults are
Warning faults, then the bell icon will appear Amber in color.
To acknowledge an alarm pop-up message and silence the audible alarm, press Key 5
or “Close”. Once an alarm pop-up message has been acknowledged by the operator,
the message will disappear.
The alarm bell lamp symbol will not disappear until 30 seconds after all faults are
inactive. The active alarm pop up message can be retrieved on the screen for review by
pressing key 4 or “Alarms”.
NOTES:
The ED-4 display also has an internal audible alarm horn that has been disabled
as it is not loud enough to meet Cummins’ requirements. Therefore, the external
horn is mandatory. The external horn is rated at 103 dB.
The alarm horn circuit is global (per engine). In other words, one display will
trigger all analog horns connected to a particular engine.
Fault codes with the FC prefix represent Cummins fault codes. During instances
in which an alarm has multiple fault codes associated with its SPN-FMI
combination, then all fault codes will be displayed in parenthesis at the end of the
fault description text. Only one fault code will appear in the fault code text section
as shown in Figure 27.
The Advanced Alarms function provides additional fault information available for all
alarms that is helpful for troubleshooting purposes. Advanced Alarms is also where the
Diagnostic Faults are found.
The Request function (Key 4) inside of the Advanced Alarm feature is used to command
the inactive faults from the ECM (Figure 30). It sends out DM2/DM54 messages to
report all faults since the last enable cycle or key cycle (previously active DTCs). The
identifier on the alarm screen will change to Inactive Faults.
There are some faults on this screen that do not require any action and do not affect the
engine. These nuisance faults are masked from the fault indication on the primary
operation screens. It is recommended that customers do not view these advanced
screens without guidance from Cummins.
A system enable switch power cycle of the ED-4 will remove the history and only show
active alarms received by the ED-4.
The ED-4 has a demo mode for the alarms. In this mode, the ED-4 broadcasts
“phantom” faults. This function is only designed for demonstration or testing purposes
and should never be used while the engine is in operation.
Figure 31: Demo Alarm
J1939 Sources
The VPF contains J1939 source settings related to specific applications. VPFs are
created so that ED-4 J1939 Source 1 ID is always the same ID as Source 2.
The steps to access the J1939 source settings are as follows: Menu->Configuration-
>Accept->Device Network Settings->”Engine Name”->J1939->Source1 or Source 2
(Figure 33)
Log Files
The ED-4 has the capability to Log data. Each power cycle of the ED-4 stores a new
Event Log file. The Event Logs are numbered according to the order in which the ED-4
takes the log.
A USB storage device with ED-4 software installed must be inserted into the ED-4 to
access the menu. Once the USB storage device is installed, the following menu will
appear. Select Extract Log(s) and these files will be copied to the USB device.
The log file(s) will appear on the USB device as a zipped file containing the log file(s) in
.txt format. The log data is presented under the following categories: Date, Time, Engine
Hours, Uptime, Event Type, and Data. This information can be useful during
troubleshooting procedures.
ED4 Parent / Child Settings
There shall be only one 'PARENT' on the network and all the displays must have
different source addresses to avoid CAN error conflicting.
There must be only one parent per connected group network of displays.
Parent application types:
• Isolated J1939 with devices connected to J1939 - One parent per engine
• Common J1939 - One parent per vessel.
• Independent J1939 but bridged by NMEA 2000 or twin J1939 display - One
parent per vessel.
Reference
1. Overview: The Remote Digital Alarm Acknowledgement feature offers the ability
to silence the audible and visual alarm with a Third-Party Multi-function display
by broadcasting a proprietary message towards the other ED-4 on the network.
This feature is useful to serve application proliferations where an ED-4 is not
available on the Helm/Bridge to acknowledge and silence an active fault
condition. The application where ED-4 is deployed as a NMEA 2000 gateway to
translate Engine & Vessel Sensor faults from J1939 to NMEA 2000 using
standard NMEA 2000 Discrete Status PGN.
2. Operation: Once a fault known to an ED-4 is activated, the ED-4 sends the
NMEA 2000 Discrete Status PGN to be interpreted by other capable NMEA 2000
Multi-function devices to display fault information to the operator, the ED-4 will
also drive an audible alarm horn. The operator may need to acknowledge or
silence the visual and audible indication of active fault condition. The Third-Party
Multi-function device can implement logic to transmit Cummins proprietary PGN
65477 (0xFFC5) towards the broadcaster of fault information i.e. ED-4 acting as
a gateway on the network. The PGN 65477 broadcast from a Third-Party Device
shall be strictly directed towards the source address ID ED-4 gateway to
successfully silence the active alarm condition. On reception of the PGN 65477,
the ED-4 will silence the audible alarm horn and the visual indication pop-up on
the ED-4 will also be closed. The receipt of this PGN 65477 will be considered by
the ED-4 as a physical alarm acknowledge function executed by an ED-4 soft
button interface. For every receipt of Cummins Alarm Acknowledgement
command, the ED-4 logs an entry to the Event Log file capturing the Device
information from where the command for acknowledgement was received.
communicate the vessel sensor information and a Third Party J1939 Display
device to monitor information at the Helm/Bridge.
o Industry Group = 4
o Is Self-Configurable = 1.
Programming Dependencies: YES. Third Party Device need to program the capability to
broadcast message towards the ED-4. The device utilizing the PGN 65477 to
acknowledge active fault conditions is expected to package “Transmitting Device
Industry Group”, “Transmitting Device Function” & “Transmitting Device Class”
information while transmitting the command to ED-4. The byte level breakdown of
message layout for PGN 65477 to be implemented is available in Appendix.
N2K 12VDC positive and negative is provided only by the N2K power supply harness.
It is imperative that the termination resistors be installed correctly. The N2K network
must have one (1) termination resistor within 2 meters of each end of the backbone.
“Over termination” and “under termination” BOTH result in intermittent or failed N2K
networks.
Notes:
• Cummins does not offer MFD’s, N2K cables, resistors, T’s, etc. These
components must be provided by the OEM.
• The N2K network combines all N2K devices onto one (1) backbone. Therefore,
this system uses one (1) N2K backbone per vessel.
Do not enable the N2K gateway at more than one ED-4 per engine.
4. Navigate to the device from Menu options for which the NMEA 2000 Gateway-ing
capability is to be tuned.
6. Navigate to "CAN 2" and modify the value to "VALID" using the "Change" button.
10. The Helm VPF shall be capable of performing as NMEA 2000 gateway for the tuned
device.
Load Equivalence Number is associated with NMEA 2000 and is broadcasted by the
ED-4 via PGN 126996 – Product Information. This parameter gets mapped related to
how much current this node on network will draw. The software assigns the value of
“LEN” as 0 currently and the ED-4 is expected to draw about 17mA at 12V.
For every 50mA, it should have a “Load Equivalency” of 1. For example, from the
specification: If a device draws 51mA to 99mA, that will correspond to a Load
Equivalency of 2.
As of now, LEN will be assigned a value of 0 and will be tracked as a change for the
next software build.
