Module 1, Lesson #4 Worksheet: World War Two

Lesson #4: Totalitarian Aggression and F.D.R.’s Response

Task #1: Examples of totalitarian aggression. Study the Prezi and answer the questions
below.
1. What was Japan’s reason for invading Manchuria in 1931? Research to find out
the League of Nations and U.S. response.
There was a worldwide depression, which Japan was part of. They saw that the only
option to have a solution to the depression would be to invade the region of Manchuria in
Northeastern China because of its resources.

2. The Nazis began to rearm in 1933. Why was this a problem? (think international law)
That would be a violation to the Treaty of Versailles.

3. Hitler announced German military expansion in 1935. What would explain the
lack of enforcement of the Treaty of Versailles on the part of the League of Nations?
The weakening of the militaries from the war would explain the lack of enforcement or
that the League did not want to go to war.

4. Give examples of how badly the Nazis violated the Treaty of Versailles regarding
military allowances.
Germany wasn't supposed to have any planes; but, the Nazi's created about over 40,000
planes. The Germans were only restricted to seven military divisions, the Nazi's made
fifty-two.

5. In Hitler’s quote, what is the “lost land” he is referring to? (Think back to Treaty of
Versailles)
Alsace-Lorraine

6. Italy’s invasion of Abyssinia (Ethiopia) in 1935 tested the League of Nations yet
again. Why do you think the League failed to stop this incursion?
The League didn't want to be harsh regarding economic sanctions on Italy. They didn’t
want to initiate an alliance between Mussolini and Hitler.

7. The Spanish Civil War has often been called “a dress rehearsal” for WWII. After
reading the Prezi and watching the video, do you think this is a valid statement? Explain
your answer with examples from the lesson.
Spain exploded in the Civil War between the Republicans and Nationalists. The
Nationalists received assistance from Hitler and Mussolini. The League of Nations
refused to support and provide help to the Spanish Government. So, the statement is
valid because it was a total disaster for the Republicans and for most of the Spanish
Government, which weakened the military during WWII.

8. What was Hitler thinking when he marched troops into the Rhineland in 1936?
He was badly outnumbered by the French yet decided to take the gamble anyway. What
do you think were the driving factors behind his decision to march on the Rhine?
He thought that he would use any tactic possible to win the war, no matter the cost. He
ordered 30,000 troops to march on Rhineland, which was a demilitarized zone between
Germany and France, that could be a factor of him wanting to invade. This action, too,
would be a violation of the Treaty of Versailles.

9. Analyze the political cartoons on the Germany marches into the Rhineland in
1936 section.
The first cartoon shows how Hitler would go to any length to win the war and keep power
in Germany under any needs necessary. The second cartoon displays that the
democratic leader will allow Hitler to get his way and walk over them, all in the name of
keeping out violence.

10. Why do you think many Austrians actually looked at the Anschluss as a good
thing for their country? Why would Hitler have a personal interest in Austria joining the
Reich?
Austrians saw it as a good thing because of Hilter’s power and the Austrians didn’t think
that things could get worse. Hitler had a personal motive, because he didn’t like Jewish
people.

11. In the Munich Agreement discussed in the video regarding the Sudetenland,
Hitler was able to gain control of the Sudetenland through appeasement. Do you think
appeasement is a good choice when dealing with a totalitarian dictator? Explain why or
why not. What do you think was the driving factor behind British Prime Minister Neville
Chamberlain’s decision to go along with Hitler’s demands?
I dont think it’s smart because they’re greedy. Their demands shouldn't have been
entertained. The British prime minister probably agreed because he felt this was the only
way to create peace.

Task #2: Familiarization. Answer the following questions on F.D.R.’s responses to

totalitarian aggression.
The Atlantic Charter
1. What was the goal of the Atlantic Charter?
It would outline the Allies' vision for the post-war world. It outlined that both, the United
Kingdom and the United States, would not seek any territorial or boundary reaches.

2. What peacekeeping organization would emerge from the Atlantic Charter?

Lend-Lease Act

3. What was the goal of the Lend-Lease Act?

It provided military aid to any country whose defense was crucial to the security and

safety of the United States.

4. What countries benefited from Lend-Lease?

Britain and China benefited mostly from the Lend-Lease.

5. According to the video, what could the consequences of inaction have been?
What did being the “Arsenal of Democracy” mean for the U.S.?
It was a phrase that President Franklin D. Roosevelt used to describe the U.S. as he tried
to raise popular support for him to send military aid to nations fighting against the Axis
powers during the war.
