Lab0 3 Lab Report Format - Comments
Introduction:
Brief description of the science and/or technology behind the experiment; not more than
approx. 3 – 10 sentences. How is the science or technology relevant or applied today?
Objective:
Materials:
List or tabulate the raw materials (lot number and expiry date) and critical equipment
(assigned number and/or serial number); accessories such as weighing boats, spatulas,
Kim wipes, pipette tips and standards used to calibrate an equipment are not part of the
report but they may be part of the laboratory raw data sheets.
Method:
List the experiment steps in bullet form or numbered, be brief. Do list the steps used to
calibrate or operate an equipment, the latter can be listed on the raw data sheet(s)
along with the operational parameters as a reference in the event of a problem.
Show 1 sample calculation of each type (with its accompanying formula), the
calculations need not be repeated for each value. Tabulate the data (number the
tables). Graph the data (number the graphs), where applicable. Present the data
chronologically, if applicable. Be careful with the units and ideally also the number of
significant figures.
Discuss the data and results. Does the data make sense? Are there any trends?
Has the objective(s) been achieved? Is it possible to explain why the final results did
not pass, if applicable. Integrate any answers to questions.
References:
2. For report, be consistent with the use of font and its size and, no italics except for
words or phrases (a report is not meant to be written in italics)
4. There is no need to indicate in materials & equipment section: buffer and standard
solutions, clamp used for sterile vial capping, spatulas, weighing boats, Q-tips, kim
wipes, lint free paper, alcohol swabs, plastic pipettes, tape, scissors; these are
auxillary accessories which are understood to be used
5. In the report methodology / method section, do not explain how to calibrate; the
latter must only be clearly indicated in the raw data only; there is even no need to
indicate that the equipment must be calibrated; phrases like measure and adjust
the pH, measure and adjust the osmolarity should be used; it is understood that
calibration will take place
6. In the report methodology section, do not write add a little water, dissolve, then QS
to the line when using a volumetric flask, it is understood that this is what one
should do
7. In the report methodology section, do not indicate as a step to perform the lab
experiment in groups, e.g. my group did this while the other group does this, and,
our professor purposely contaminated, it is not relevant
8. In the report data & results, it is not proper to include the data tables with
calibration results, the latter must only be clearly indicated in the raw data only
9. In the report, summarize the data & results in tabular format remember to include
the specifications limits
10. In the report, only one sample calculation of each type is enough
12. Raw data sheets should show proof of calibration, what equipment was used, the
standards and the final result from and after calibration
13. For the data sheets p. 1 name, date and lab no.; data sheet p. 2 (i.e. another
separate sheet) name, date and lab. no.
14. No writing over, No pencil, Pen only, corrections made by drawing a line over the
incorrect entry followed by initial and date with explanation as to correction
15. Before submitting your document, print and proof read for any typographical errors
