Oh, let the nations be glad and sing for joy! For You shall judge the people righteously,
And govern the nations on earth. Selah
5
Let the peoples praise You, O God; Let all the peoples praise You.
6
Then the earth shall [a]yield her increase; God, our own God, shall bless us.
7
God shall bless us, And all the ends of the earth shall fear Him.

1.0 Introduction:
Daddy GO once said that thanksgiving is an indispensable ( a crucial) activity for every child of
God. For us to experience the blessings of God on continuous basis we need to embibe a live
style of thanksgiving.

2.0 Key Definitions:

2.1 What is thanksgiving?
Thanksgiving is the act of giving thanks, grateful acknowledgement of benefit or favour
especially to God; a public celebration in acknowledgement of divine favour or kindness.

2.2 What is Benefits?

This is described as an advantage or profit gained from something.

2.3 In essence, benefits of thanksgiving are the advantages or profits gained from giving thanks,
especially, to God for acknowledgement of divine favour or kindness.

3.0 Why do we give thanks?

Daddy GO (Pastor E.A. Adeboye) in one of his ministration outlined the reasons for giving thanks:
1. Divine command – 1 Thess 5:18
(1 Thess 5:18 -in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.)

2. For God's mercies – Ps 118:1, 136:1, Lam 3:22-23, Rom 9:15-16

(Ps 118:1 & 136:1 -Oh, give thanks to the Lord, for He is good! For His mercy endures forever)
(Lam 3:22-23 - Through the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed, Because His
22

compassions fail not. 23 They are new every morning; Great is Your faithfulness.
15
For He says to Moses, “I will have mercy on whomever I will have mercy, and I will have
16
compassion on whomever I will have compassion.” So then it is not of him who wills, nor of
him who runs, but of God who shows mercy.
3. For God's past deeds to us and for him to do more – Ps 103: 1-5
Ps 103: 1-5 - 1Bless the LORD, O my soul; And all that is within me, bless His holy name!
2
Bless the LORD, O my soul, And forget not all His benefits:
3
Who forgives all your iniquities, Who heals all your diseases,
4
Who redeems your life from destruction, Who crowns you with lovingkindness and tender
mercies,
5
Who satisfies your mouth with good things, So that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.

4. Divine mandate – 1 Peter 2:9

1 Peter 2:9 9 But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own
special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into
His marvelous light;

5. To prevent loosing what we already have – Luke 12: 16-20, 17:15-18

16
Luke 12: 16 - Then He spoke a parable to them, saying: “The ground of a certain rich man
yielded plentifully. 17 And he thought within himself, saying, ‘What shall I do, since I have no
room to store my crops?’ 18 So he said, ‘I will do this: I will pull down my barns and build
greater, and there I will store all my crops and my goods. 19 And I will say to my soul, “Soul,
you have many goods laid up for many years; take your ease; eat, drink, and be merry.” ’ 20 But
God said to him, ‘Fool! This night your soul will be required of you; then whose will those things
be which you have provided?

6. For future request – an adage says if a child knows how to give thanks for yesterday's favour,
he will get another one – 1 Kings 3:4 (Pay Tithe on what your expectation is)
4
Now the king went to Gibeon to sacrifice there, for that was the great high place: Solomon
offered a thousand burnt offerings on that altar.

4.0 Contents of Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving encompasses the following
1. Giving glory to God - Luk 17:15-16, Ps 34:3
Ps 34:3 - Oh, magnify the Lord with me, And let us exalt His name together.
2. Sacrifices – Psalm 116:17
It means giving something up – something that we value – and we offer it to the Lord, to
worship and honor him. The Thank Offering was costly
17
I will offer to You the sacrifice of thanksgiving, And will call upon the name of the Lord.

3. Honouring/blessing God – Prov 3:9-10

Honor the Lord with your possessions, And with the firstfruits of all your increase;
10
So your barns will be filled with plenty, And your vats will overflow with new wine.

4. Praises, Singing, eulogizing God – Ps 100: 4-5, 34: 1, 95: 1-5

Ps 100: 4-5 – 4 Enter into His gates with thanksgiving, And into His courts with praise.
Be thankful to Him, and bless His name.
5
For the Lord is good; His mercy is everlasting, And His truth endures to all generations.

5. Worship – John 4:23-24; Ps 95:6; 1 Chro. 16:29c

Ps 95:6 - Oh come, let us worship and bow down; Let us kneel before the Lord our Maker.
23
John 4:23-24; - But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship
24
the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him. God is Spirit,
and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”

5.0 Benefits of Thanksgiving

1. Blessings – Ps 67:5-7; 103:1-5
5
Ps 67:5-7 - Let the peoples praise You, O God; Let all the peoples praise You.
6
Then the earth shall [a]yield her increase; God, our own God, shall bless us.
7
God shall bless us, And all the ends of the earth shall fear Him.

2. Miracle of multiplication – Prov 3:9-10 (First Fruit); Mk 6:41-44 (5 Loaves of bread & 2 fishes)
Prov 3:9-10 - 9 Honor the Lord with your possessions, And with the first fruits of all your
increase; 10 So your barns will be filled with plenty, And your vats will overflow with new wine.

Mk 6:41-44 - 41 And when He had taken the five loaves and the two fish, He looked up to
heaven, blessed and broke the loaves, and gave them to His disciples to set before them; and
the two fish He divided among them all. 42 So they all ate and were filled. 43 And they took up
twelve baskets full of fragments and of the fish. 44 Now those who had eaten the loaves
were [a]about five thousand men.

3. Miracle of raising the dead – John 11:41-44 (Lazarus raised from Death)
John 11:41-44 - 41 Then they took away the stone [a]from the place where the dead man was
lying. And Jesus lifted up His eyes and said, “Father, I thank You that You have heard
Me. 42 And I know that You always hear Me, but because of the people who are standing by I
said this, that they may believe that You sent Me.” 43 Now when He had said these things, He
cried with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come forth!” 44 And he who had died came out bound hand
and foot with graveclothes, and his face was wrapped with a cloth. Jesus said to them, “Loose
him, and let him go.”

4. Miracle of wholeness beyond healing Luk 17:17-19

17
Luk 17:17-19 - So Jesus answered and said, “Were there not ten cleansed? But
where are the nine? 18 Were there not any found who returned to give glory to God except
this foreigner?” 19 And He said to him, “Arise, go your way. Your faith has made you well.”

Me; And I will punish all who oppress them.

Jonah 2:9-10 - 9 But I will sacrifice to You, With the voice of thanksgiving;
I will pay what I have vowed. Salvation is of the Lord.”

So the Lord spoke to the fish, and it vomited Jonah onto dry land.

Ps 50:14-15 - 14 Offer to God thanksgiving, And pay your vows to the Most High.
15
Call upon Me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you shall glorify Me.”

7. Peace of God – Phil 4:6-7

Phil 4:6-7 - 6 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication,
with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; 7 and the peace of God, which
surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

6.0 Conclusion
