A. Reviewing Explain the difference between solute and solvent.
previous lesson or What makes a solution homogenous or heterogenous?
presenting the new
lesson Direction: Classify each substance as solute or solvent.
1. buko juice
2. water
3. sugar
4. coffee powder
5. salt
Activity:
Directions: Mix the following and observe. Fill out the table below.
Task 1: Put one spoonful of cooking oil and one spoonful of
water on a plastic cup.
Task 2. Put one spoonful of vinegar and one spoonful of soy
sauce in a glass bowl.
Task 3: Put one spoonful of honey and one spoonful of water in a
glass.

Guide Question:
• What do you think happened to the combined materials?
• Describe the appearance of the combined materials.
Brief Discussion:
• The first thing you will observe is that oil and water do not mix.
Instead, the oil slowly rises to the top of the water. This is
because of the difference in the density of the two liquids.
• The oil is less dense than the water. Therefore, it rises to the
top.
• When two liquids combine to form a new liquid, we call the
liquids “miscible solution.”
• When two liquids do not mix together and instead form layers,
we call them “immiscible solution.”
• The chemical properties of the liquids will determine if they mix
or not.
• Some liquids when mixed with water, they cannot be
distinguished anymore.
• Other liquids when mixed with water, it makes the water cloudy.
• Other liquids when mixed with water, it formed 2 or more layers.
• Water is usually called the universal solvent because it can
dissolve many substances but not all.
H. Making What happens to liquid matter when mixed with another liquid matter?
generalizations - When two liquids are soluble in each other in any proportion, it
and abstractions is called miscible solution.
about the lesson - Miscible solutions are homogeneous mixture. But if two liquids
are insoluble to each other, it is called immiscible solution and it
is a heterogenous mixture.
- Some liquids when mixed with water, they cannot be
distinguished anymore.
- Other liquids when mixed with water, it makes the water cloudy.
- Other liquids, when mixed with water, form 2 or more layers.
- Water is usually called the universal solvent because it can
dissolve many substances but not all.
I. Finding practical Let us apply this in real life situation.
applications of What if_____________________.
concepts and skills Situation: Your mother is not feeling well for the past few days. She
in daily living has a cough. She asks you a favor to prepare something that would
ease her condition. What drinks can you prepare for her?
