Direct Instruction: 30 minutes Leaners

o Explain plastic waste statistics - Take notes

o Discuss recycling and reusing materials - Ask questions
o Show examples of sustainable living
practices

Explain Plastic Waste Statistics:

Use infographics, charts, or graphs to illustrate

plastic waste statistics.

-Real-life examples: Share local or global

examples of plastic waste impacts

-Data analysis: Provide statistics on plastic

waste generation, recycling rates, and
environmental impacts.

The estimated global plastic waste generation

was around 6.30 billion tons from 1950 to 2015,
and about 80 % of plastics accumulate in the
natural environment. Liang et al. (2021)
calculated the plastic waste generation in 2016
to be around 242 million tons.

Differentiation:
- Provide additional support for struggling students by working with them in a small group or
individually.
- Offer challenge opportunities for advanced students by encouraging them to explore more
diagrams.

Homework / Independent work:

o Research local recycling programs
o Design a poster or infographic about plastic waste reduction
Leaners needing special attention:

Learners are encouraged to ask questions whenever they need clarification or if they want a
concept to be repeated. In the case of learners with poor eyesight, they will be advised to sit in
the front for better visibility.

recycling and reusing materials. The final output will be an awareness campaign that can be shared
within the school community.

Research Phase (10 marks)

Students will conduct research on the following topics:

o The environmental impact of plastic waste (e.g., pollution, wildlife impact, ecosystem disruption).
o The benefits of recycling and reusing plastic materials.

Deliverable: A fact sheet (minimum 1 page) summarizing their findings.

Marking Criteria:

Relevance and depth of research (5 marks)

Clarity and organization of information (5 marks)

Creative Phase (15 marks)

Using their research findings, students will create an awareness campaign that includes:

A poster or infographic (5 marks)

A short presentation (3-5 minutes) explaining the importance of recycling and how individuals can reduce
plastic waste (5 marks)
A social media post (e.g., a tweet, Instagram post, or Facebook status) promoting recycling (5 marks)

Marking Criteria:

Creativity and visual appeal of the poster/infographic (5 marks)

Clarity and persuasiveness of the presentation (5 marks)
Engagement and effectiveness of the social media post (5 marks)

Reflection Phase (5 marks)
