What are Modal Verbs?
Modal verbs are a type of auxiliary verb that express modality, which includes notions like possibility, necessity, obligation, permission, ability, and suggestion. They help us express degrees of certainty, ability, and permission.
Types of Modal Verbs:
1. Modal Verbs of Obligation: - Must (necessity, strong obligation)
- Should (advice, recommendation) - Ought to (moral obligation) - Have to (external obligation)
2. Modal Verbs of Permission: - Can (ability, permission)
- May (permission, possibility) - Could (past ability, permission) - Might (possibility, permission)
3. Modal Verbs of Ability: - Can (present ability)
- Could (past ability) - Be able to (ability in general)
4. Modal Verbs of Suggestion: - Should - Ought to - Could - Might
5. Modal Verbs of Possibility: - May - Might - Could - Can
6. Modal Verbs of Prediction: - Will - Shall – Should - Must
7. Modal Verbs of Prohibition: - Must not - Can't - May not - Shouldn't
