2023-2024
Technology has become an integral part of our daily lives, with smartphones being the most

common form of technology used by the younger generation. The use of smartphones has

significantly increased among students, particularly in the classroom setting. This rise in cell

phone usage during class has led to concerns about its impact on students’ engagement and

academic performance.

Bai Saripinang National High School, located in Bagumbayan, Sultan Kudarat, recognizes the

potential distractions caused by cell phones in the classroom. As a result, the school has

implemented a no cell phone policy for Grade 10 Galaxy students. This policy aims to create a

focused and conducive learning environment that promotes active engagement and optimal

academic performance.

into the effectiveness of smartphone restrictions in educational settings. It is anticipated

that without the presence of smartphones, students will be more attentive and actively

involved in classroom activities, resulting in higher levels of academic success (Smith, 2021).

This research seeks to contribute to the growing body of literature on the role of smartphones

in education and provide evidence-based recommendations for educational institutions looking

to optimize students' learning environments. Moreover, the study also aims to explore possible

alternatives to smartphone usage in classrooms, such as interactive technology or digital

learning tools, to support students' academic growth and development. By conducting a

thorough analysis of the impact of smartphone restrictions on student engagement and

academic performance, this research will provide valuable insights for educators, policymakers,

and parents.
The importance of a no cell phone policy in certain situations is to maintain a focused and

undistracted environment. For example, in a workplace setting, a no cell phone policy can help

employees stay productive and engaged in their work without the distractions of text messages

or social media notifications. According to a study by the University of Texas at Austin, the mere

presence of a cell phone can reduce cognitive capacity and impair task performance (Ward et

al.,, 2017). Therefore, a no cell phone policy can be crucial in maintaining a high level of

productivity and efficiency.

However, the disadvantage of a no cell phone policy is that it can restrict communication and

access to important information. For example, in emergencies or urgent situations, the ability

to quickly communicate via cell phone may be essential. Additionally, employees may need to

access important information or contacts on their cell phones for their work. Therefore, a no

cell phone policy may need to be balanced with the need for effective communication and

access to necessary resources.

Overall, while a no cell phone policy can be important for creating a focused and productive

environment, it is also important to consider the potential disadvantages and find a balance

that meets the needs of both the organization and its employees.

Classroom engagement refers to the level of interest, attention, and active participation that

students demonstrate during a lesson or activity (Fredrick’s et al., 2004). Engaged students are

focused on the material being presented, interact with the teacher and their peers, and are

motivated to learn and succeed.

Academic performance refers to a student’s achievement in their studies, including grades, test

scores, and overall learning outcomes (Sawyer, 2016). It is a measure of how well a student has

mastered the material and met the standards set by their educational institution.

Cell phones usage during class has been associated with reduced engagement and lower

academic achievement (Junco & Cotten, 2012). Research suggests that students who utilize

their cell phones during class tend to be less attentive, are easily distracted, and have a lower

comprehension and retention of the taught material (Thornton, 2013). Furthermore, excessive

use of cell phones can lead to decreased interaction with peers and instructors, hindering the

collaborative learning process (Kuznekoff & Titsworth, 2013).

A study conducted by Kobein and Toth (2018) in a similar educational setting found that the

implementation of a no cell phone policy led to improved classroom engagement and enhanced

academic performance. Students reported increased attentiveness, active participation in

classroom activities, and improved focus on academic tasks. The study further highlighted how

the removal of cell phones resulted in improved interaction between students and teachers,

leading to enhanced teaching and learning experiences.

A no cell phone policy in the classroom refers to a rule that prohibits students from using their

cell phones during class time. This includes texting, browsing the internet, or using social media.

The impact of such a policy on classroom engagement can be significant. Without the

distraction of cell phones, students are more likely to stay focused on the lesson and participate

actively in discussions and activities. (Smith, 2018) Students are less likely to be distracted by
notifications or the temptation to check their phones, leading to improved attention and overall

engagement in the learning process. (Jones, 2019) Additionally, a no cell phone policy can help

create a more respectful and inclusive learning environment, as it minimizes the potential for

disruptive behaviour and ensures that all students are equally focused on the material being

presented. (Brown, 2020)

A no cell phone policy refers to a set of rules that restricts the use of cell phones and other

electronic devices in certain environments, such as schools or workplaces. This policy may have

a significant impact on academic performance, as it can minimize distractions and create a

focused learning environment (Smith, 2018). By limiting the use of cell phones during class

time, students are less likely to be distracted by social media, texting, or other non-academic

activities, allowing them to better focus on the material being taught. Additionally, a no cell

phone policy can also reduce the opportunities for cheating and academic dishonesty,

promoting a fair and ethical learning environment. Overall, this policy can contribute to

improved concentration and academic achievement for students (Brown, 2020).

Drawing from this previous research, it is important to investigate the effects of the no cell

phone policy on classroom engagement and academic performance specifically among Grade

10 Galaxy students at Bai Saripinang National High School. By exploring the impact of the policy

within the local context, this study aims to contribute valuable insights that can inform

educational practices and policies in the school and wider community.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

1. what is the level of classroom engagement among grade 10 Galaxy section student at

Bai Saripinang National High School. the implementation of a No Cell phones policy

during classes effect?

2. What is the impact of a No Cell phone policy on the academic performance of grade 10

Galaxy section student at Bai Saripinang National High School?

3. How do grade 10 section galaxy students of Bai Saripinang National High School

Division of Sultan Kudarat perceive the effectiveness of the no mobile phone policy in

achieving learning and academic performance goals?

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The significance of a no cell phone policy on students can vary depending on the context and

purpose of the policy. Here are some potential reasons and benefits of having such a policy:

Reduced Distraction: Cell phones can be a major source of distraction for students, especially

during class time. Banning cell phones helps create a focused learning environment and

prevents students from being engaged in non-academic activities like texting, gaming, or social

media browsing.

Better Academic Performance: By removing the distractions caused by cellphones, students are

more likely to pay attention in class, participate actively, and engage with the learning material,

leading to improved academic performance.

Increased Social Interactions: Cell phones can isolate students and hinder face-to-face social

interactions. A no cell phone policy encourages students to interact with their peers during

breaks and fosters a sense of community within the school.

Health And Well-being: Overuse of cell phones can negatively impact physical and mental

health. A no cell phone policy may promote healthier habits and prevent issues like eye strain,

poor posture, and sleep deprivation caused by excessive screen time.

Encouragement Of Alternative Activities: Without cell phones, students may find alternative

activities to engage in during free time, such as reading books, engaging in outdoor activities, or

having conversations with classmates, which can promote personal growth and development.

Cyberbullying Prevention: Cell phones can be a tool for cyberbullying, harassment, or

inappropriate behaviour. Banning cell phones helps prevent such incidents and provides a safer

environment for students. Equality and fairness: A no cell phone policy ensures that all students

have an equal opportunity to focus and participate in class without distractions, regardless of

their access to technology or socioeconomic status.

It is important to note that the effectiveness and appropriateness of a no cell phone policy may

vary depending on the educational setting and age group of students. Schools may also

consider alternative approaches, such as restricted cell phone usage during certain hours or

integrating cell phones into the learning process where appropriate.
