Teens and Extracurriculars
Teens and Extracurriculars
A how to guide for raising a teenager that works for every parent is hard to come by. The
need for this guide is due to parents often feeling lost when parenting a high school student;
whether it be disciplinary issues, failing grades, or feeling as if their child is socially isolated,
there is a helping hand that is ready to assist. Hello, my name is Maria Rosales it is spelled and
i represent the mighty people of baker high school. High school students should be required to
participate in a school based extracurriculars and clubs due to the nemours benefits that most
certainly outweigh the costs.
As it can be seen, school affiliated sports are a must have in most students' lives. A
study of “1098 high-school boys …, found that 21.8 percent of the athletes planned to go to
college, whereas only 11.6 percent of the non-athletes planned to do so”says researchers from
the US department of education. This shows one of the major benefits to participating in high
school sports. It’s often a struggle for young adults to come to terms with attending college.
There are plenty of parents who want their children to grow up and go off to college to become
successful and school athletics is a great investment to becoming the best that student can be.
School related sports have also been known to build teamwork, punctuality, and responsibility. If
we look at the average high school football team requirements one could find that each student
must have a 2.5 GPA unweighted to participate. This small requirement can push a student to
strive for better grades or work as a reminder that every assignment counts towards somthing
greater.
Furthermore, while youth participate in body engaging activities, they can also engage
their minds in academic clubs. For some students college is only available to them through a
scholarship and not everyone is athletically gifted, luckily for them, they can gain academic
scholarships. One of the best ways to gain one of these types of scholarships is through “a
market-based approach” for example. Academic clubs help teach a student that there is higher
value to their work. Some students may find school work as something challenging or difficult
because there is no quick reward, like myself, but for an academic student in these clubs, they
can see that their hard work will pay off through scholarships and that can inspire them to
pursue higher education. A really great example of this is speech and debate. I am able to work
hard and prepare for somthing that holds value to me then go out and present it to people. This
academic sport has really helped me enjoy school more and may even grant me a scholarship
to attend a school that can teach me how to do the things i want to do. Like i previously mention,
i struggle making school as a whole work for me but my extra curricules give a reason to want to
try and succeed. Now, i know Not everyone may be looking for a scholarship or higher
education, but that's okay because these extracurriculars also provide an interesting pastime
and work as great resume fillers. Whether a teen chooses to go after a college degree or join
the workforce as soon as possible, academic clubs provide a reliable reference and improve
any resume.
In light of academic clubs, one should also look at schools performing arts and art
programs. Arts can include Drama, Marching band, dance, etc. and all help release a student's
creative side and help build a student's social relationships. Many students are now seen
socially isolating themselves for one reason or another and that can be very concerning for a
parent to see in their teen. These kinds of clubs are formatted to draw a student out from their
dark corners and give them something to enjoy while gaining a second family. It's hard for a
young adult to try and find their way in the world and having a place to creatively express
themselves, serves as a guide to their journey into adulthood. Of course, in any type of art
program there will be some costly aspects but you cant put a price on happiness.
In addition to the performing arts, schools also offer volunteering and community service
opportunities. Students can “find a place that’s noncompetitive, where they can just be
themselves, feel good in their own skin, [and] gain confidence … that [goes] with it” says
Gerson, a reshercher on Mindfulness. Partaking in community service programs would give a
student a chance to feel accomplished and proud of something they did while teaching them
important team and leadership skills. Students may begin to understand how to problem solve
and learn more about managing their time . Community service also presents students with the
opportunity of becoming more involved with their community; however, there can be a lot of
physical labor attached to this kind of activity that a student might not anticipate. Even if the
students do get a little dirt on their pants they can learn an abundance from their community. I
know i definitely enjoy going out to volunteer at local animal shelters and i really just makes me
feel like a good person.
To further explain why school affiliated extracurriculars and clubs should be required for
high school students, one should take a look at the bigger picture. Self exploration happens in a
person's teenhood, and what better way to aid in that exploration than by presenting a teen with
a little bit of everything. It's without a doubt that there will be costs, some physical, some
metaphorical. These activities can stress students and it is important to allow for a bit of down
down time and that is important when expanding their extracurriculars. Students preoccupied
with these school function also show lower crime, drug and overall delinquent behavior. These
activities open a new world to students and help guide them on a positive path. It gives them a
chance to gain experience and open themselves up to new opportunities. It is currently seen
that these opportunities are not available to everyone and making it a requirement will allow all
students a chance to explore themselves and walk through newly opened doors.
To conclude, high school students should be required to participate in school affiliated
extracurriculars or clubs. There are numerous benefits as a whole and as an individual that hold
trump over any expense or inconvenience that may occur. High school students are the life of
today and the leaders of tomorrow. What greater of an honor and a responsibility than to nurture
the skills, minds, and hearts of our teens. Once again, there is no how to guide on raising a
teenager but, there is a way to guide them.
Thank you for your time.
