Scope of Economic Geography

1) Economic geography is a social science- economic geography is an important branch of human geography.
Human geography is a part of social science which is concerned with the study of human phenomena on the
surface of Earth. Economic geography studies about the economic aspects of society and explains worldwide
areal differentiation of these aspects. Hence, it follows the rules and principles of social sciences.

2) Economic geography is the analysis of economic phenomena in relation to space- economic geography is
that part of geography which attempts to enquire into the production,exchange and consumption of goods by
people in different areas of world. It explains why few areas are very good in production of goods and why some
areas are not much productive.

3) Economic geography is a spatial science-. Just like geology and astronomy economic geography is also a
spatial science. It studies the spatial aspects of economic phenomena such as resources economic activities and
economic development etc.

4) Economic geography is a systematic science- economic geography attempt to study the economics
phenomena on the surface of the earth as a systematic discipline. there is no other branch of systematic science
which is devoted for the systematic analysis of economic activities in relation to their distribution pattern on the
surface of Earth.

5) Economic geography is nearest to economics- economic geography and economics both are concerned with
social sciences and economic geography has the closest and nearest relation with economics.a number of laws
and principles of economics are frequently utilised in explaining the distribution, production,exchange,utilisation
etc of various economic phenomena in economic geography.for much longer time the scope,method, conceptual
structure, organisation and approaches of economic geography have been taken from the discipline of
economics.
