1. determines the:
(a) intercepts;
(b) zeroes; and
(c) asymptotes of rational functions.
DEFINITION OF TERMS
• The domain of a function is the set of all values that the
variable x can take.
• The range of a function is the set of all values that f(x)
can take.
• The zeroes of a function are the values of x which make
the function zero. The real numbered zeroes are also x-
intercepts of the graph of the function.
< >
DEFINITION OF TERMS
• The y-intercept is the function value when x = 0.
• The vertical line x = a is a vertical asymptote of a function f
if the graph of f either increases or decreases without bound
as the x-values approach a from the
• right or left.
• The horizontal line y = b is a horizontal asymptote of the
function f if f(x) gets closer to b as x increases or decreases
without bound.
< >
1. Reduce the rational function to lowest terms by
cancelling out the common factor/s in the numerator
and denominator.
2. Find the values a that will make the denominator of
the reduced rational function equal to zero.
3. The line x = a is the vertical asymptote.
< >
Let n be the degree of the numerator and d be the degree of the
denominator:
• If n < d ,the horizontal asymptote is y = 0

• If n = d, the horizontal asymptote is y = , where a is the leading

coefficient of the numerator and b is the leading coefficient of the
denominator.
• If n > d(Exactly by 1), there is no horizontal asymptote, but is a
OBLIQUE ASYMPTOTE / SLANT ASYMPTOTE.

b. y - intercept is (0, -1)
ASYMPTOTES:
a. VERTICAL ASYMPTOTE : x + 2 = 0, x = -2
b. HORIZONTAL ASYMPTOTE: (n = d), y = 1 / 1 => y = 1
c. OBLIQUE ASYMPTOTE: NONE
For each rational function, determine its domain, intercepts,
