1. What is olympism?
It is a philosophy of life which places sport at the service of humanity. This philosophy
is based on the interaction of the qualities of the body, will and mind. Olympism is
expressed through actions which link sport to culture and education.
2. Write in brief about Olympic values.
A. EXCELLENCE.
It is an Olympic ideal, which refers to giving one’s best, on the field of play or
life, without measuring oneself with others, but just aiming at reaching one’s
personal objectives with determination and efforts. It is not only about
winning, but mainly focusing on the participation and making progress to do
the best.
B. FRIENDSHIP.
This value broadly refers to building a peaceful and better world to solidarity,
team spirit, joy, and optimism.
C. RESPECT.
It represents the ethical principle that should inspire all who participate in the
Olympic programs, which includes self-respect, respect for other players,
rules, etc.
3. Note down objectives of Olympic.
∞ To develop personality, citizenship among nations.
∞ Draw attention towards physical training for development of excellence.
∞ To create sense of loyalty, companionship, team spirit.
∞ To promote productivity.
∞ To contribute better understanding between people and nations.
4. Explain different aspects of Olympic value education.
A. JOY OF EFFORT.
According to UNESCO, every person has the right to create an effort among
physical training or sports he/she is engaged in and have a joy of effort.
B. FAIR PLAY.
It is to play with proper technique and excellence but play with rules and
honesty and with patience.
C. RESPECT FOR OTHERS.
Living in a multi-cultural world each and every participant should be
respected against their race, gender, disability, culture, etc. Teams help in
relation building, leading to respect.
D. EXCELLENCE.
It which refers to giving one’s best, on the field of play or life, without
measuring oneself with others, but just aiming at reaching one’s personal
objectives with determination and efforts. It is not only about winning, but
mainly focusing on the participation and making progress to do the best.
E. BALANCE BETWEEN BODY, WILL AND MIND.
Learning should happen in the whole body & mind and it cannot be done
without will. Thus, sports is a medium of balance between body, will and
mind.
5. Explain about ancient Olympic games.
Olympic started in Greece in 776 BCE, in pre-historic period and continued for many
centuries and were known as ‘Greece festivals.’ Its was named after Mount Olympus
in Greece. Many games as foot race, long races, boxing, wrestling, hippodrome
(horse racing), etc. All participants were giver 10 months for training prior to the
games. Also, women were not allowed to participate and even attend the games.
These were conducted every four years, and period between two games was called
Olympiad.
6. Explain about modern Olympic games.
This initiative was taken by Pierre De Coubertin, in 1896 at Athens. It was done to
strengthen amateur sports to develop everlasting qualities for modern education. In
1894, The International Olympic Committee (IOC) was formed at Paris to conduct
modern Olympic games.
7. Describe the Olympic flag.
It was created by Baron Coubertin in 1913 and was released in 1914. It has a white
background without any border, with five interlocked rings at the center of color –
blue, yellow, black, green, and red. It was a symbolic representation of the five
continents of the world (at that time). It was hoisted in 1920 in Antwerp, Belgium.
8. Describe the Olympic symbol.
It contains five interlocked rings of different colors, representing different continents
(America, Africa, Asia, Australia, and Europe). It is the symbol of unity among the
sports person from each nation.
9. Define the motto of Olympic.
The motto of Olympic is “citius-altius-fortius” (Latin) which means “faster-higher-
stronger.” It was proposed by Baron Coubertin in 1894, who borrowed it from his
friend Henri Didon. It was first announced in 1924 at Olympic games, Paris, France.
10. What is the Olympic oath?
It is taken by the athlete of the host country. It is as follows:
In the name of all competitors, I promise that we shall take part in these Olympic
Games, respecting and abiding by the rules which govern them, committing
ourselves to a sport without doping and without drugs, in the true spirit of
sportsmanship, for the glory of sport and the honor of our teams.
11. Describe Olympic Hymn/Anthem.
It is a musical work composed by Spiro samara, and is played when Olympic flag is
raised in the opening of Olympic games.
12. When was IOC formed?
International Olympic committee (IOC), was formed on 23rd June 1894 by Pierre De
Coubertin, with Demetrois Vikelas as its first president.
