Technology in Counseling
Technology in Counseling
The technology at my counseling site consists of two phones, excel spreadsheets that
show the current clients, the model used with the client, and the next counseling session with that
client, and a Google calendar to keep track of when we see clients. The technology at my site
needs improvement in being able to contact clients and clients being able to contact us
efficiently. My supervisor does not want to implement email which would be helpful for clients
to cancel, reschedule, and I could send reminders to clients for their session especially since I’m
not there all the time. The Google calendar that I use is helpful in scheduling clients and keeping
a record of who I have met with that week. That said, I can keep track of my hours for practicum
and internship with the Google calendar as well. After reading more about my peers’ sites and
what their sites offer, it would be great to be able to have those resources also. Further, I want to
advocate for my clients and myself by speaking with my supervisor about the technology at our
site and if we can implement more efficient ways to communicate with clients. Moreover, from a
social justice perspective, I believe that we use very simple methods when it comes to clients
being able to get in contact with us or schedule a session with us, so I currently do not see any
barriers that technology causes. As my site is unique, clients can walk into the Spiritual Life
Center and schedule an appointment without using technology. Additionally, the counseling that
we do is free to service members, families, contractors, and basically anyone that has a DOD ID.
Ultimately, I do not believe that there are any barriers for clients at my site, but I do believe that
my site could implement more technology into counseling as it would be helpful to the clients
and myself. I hope that I’m able to change the way that technology is used at my site, but it may
