PHY606:BASICS OF NANOTECHNOLOGY

Course Outcomes: Through this course students should be able to

CO1 :: grasp the basic scientific concepts that underlie nanoscience.

CO2 :: recognize the role of quantum mechanical principles in nanoscale structures.

CO3 :: describe the methods employed for the synthesis of nanomaterials.

CO4 :: employ characterization tools to examine and interpret nanomaterial properties.

CO5 :: apply analytical techniques to determine the optical and electronic properties of
nanomaterials.

Unit I
Background to Nanoscience : Definition of Nano, influence of nano over micro/macro, Emergence
of Nanotechnology, Nanomaterials and Nanotechnology, Moore's Law, Concept of quantum tunneling
and its application in nanotechnology
Unit II
Quantum mechanical treatment and density of states (DOS) : Comparison with DOS of bulk
materials, Quantum confinement:one dimensional confinement (nanowell or quantum well), double
quantum well, array of quantum wells, Two-dimensional confinement: nanowire or quantum wire,
Nanobelts, Nanorings, Three-dimensional confinement: nanodots or quantum dots, Nanoparticles and
their structure and shape, Artificial atoms, quantum mechanical treatment of double quantum well
and quantum rings
Unit III
Methods of synthesis of nanomaterials : Top-down and bottom-up approaches, Sol-gel method,
Electro deposition method, Growth of Nanoparticles, Pulsed laser method, Physical Vapor Deposition
(PVD), Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD), Combustion method, Ball milling, Plasma arching, Chemical
Vapor deposition, Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD), Lithography: Photolithography, Nanomanipulation,
Dip-pen nanolithography
Unit IV
Characterization Tools for structural properties of Nanomaterials : X-ray diffraction,
interpretation of diffraction data into crystal structure, Peak broadening, FWHM, Sherrer formula and
its application in nanotechnology, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy, IR Resolution Software
and its applications Thermo-gravimetric (TG), differential thermal analysis (DTA)
Unit V
Characterization technique for Surface and morphology studies : Transmission electron
microscope, Scanning electron microscope, Scanning tunneling microscope, contact mode, resonant
mode, force measurement, magnetic and electrical measurements from STM, measuring mechanical
properties from STM, Nature of inter-atomic forces, Atomic force microscope and its modes of
operation
Unit VI
Properties of nanomaterials : Optical properties of nanomaterials, absorption of em waves,
extinction coefficient, Band gap determination using K-M equation, Raman spectroscopy, UV-Visible
spectroscopy, photoluminescence and phosphorescence from Nanomaterials, XPES, MEMS and NEMS
