DETAILS
ACADEMIC YEAR: 2024-25 GRADE: 5
SUBJECT: Science Unit 2-Structure of flowers
Revision worksheet 3
NAME:

1. Choose and circle the correct answer:

a The part of a flower that produces pollen is –

i. Anther ii. Stigma iii. Ovary iv. Filament

b. The female reproductive organ of a flower is called the:
i. Anther ii. Filament iii. Pistil iv. Sepal
c. What is the role of the stigma in a flower?
i. To produce pollen ii. To attract insects
iii. To receive pollen iv. To support the flower
d. What protects the flower bud before it opens?
i. Sepal ii. Petal iii. Stamen iv. Carpel
2. After this process of fertilization, list the changes that take place in the following parts-

i. Petals- ___dry and fall off____________

ii. Sepals ___dry and fall off_____________

iii. Ovule- ___Seed ___________________

iv. Ovary- ___fruit___________________

3. What is the difference between self-pollination and cross-pollination?

Self-pollination occurs when a flower’s Cross-pollination happens when pollen from
pollen lands on its own stigma, leading to one plant’s flower is transferred to a different
seed production without needing another plant’s flower of the same species, usually
plant. by insects, birds, or wind.
4. Fill the blanks:
a. Pollination through wind is called ____Anemophily___________________
b. Pollination through water is called _____Hydrophily______________________
c. Pollination through insects is called ___Entomophily_______________________
d. Pollination through birds is called ____Ornithophily________________________

3. a. Why Wind-pollinated flowers have small or no petals.

Wind-pollinated flowers do not need to attract pollinators like insects or birds, so they often have
small or no petals. Instead, they focus on producing large amounts of pollen that can be easily
carried by the wind to other flowers. Large petals would be of no use for these flowers.
b. How do pollinators contribute to cross-pollination, and what could happen if pollinators
disappeared?
Pollinators like bees, butterflies, and birds transfer pollen from one flower to another, helping in
cross-pollination. If pollinators disappeared, many plants might struggle to reproduce, leading to
reduced biodiversity.

4. Sarah loves to explore her garden. One day, she finds a flower she has never seen
before. The flower has five bright yellow petals, green sepals, and a sweet fragrance.
Curious to learn more, she decides to study the flower’s structure. Her observations are:
• The flower has five petals and five sepals.
• It has several stamens with yellow pollen.
• There is one pistil in the center of the flower.
• The pistil has a sticky stigma, a long style, and an ovary at the base.
• The flower attracts bees and butterflies.
a. Why are the petals brightly coloured and fragrant?
The petals are brightly coloured and fragrant to attract pollinators, such as bees and
butterflies, which help in the process of pollination.
b. What role does the pistil play in the flower's reproductive process?
The pistil is the female reproductive part of the flower. The stigma catches pollen, the style
allows the pollen to travel down to the ovary, and the ovary contains ovules that develop into
seeds after fertilization.
c. What might happen after pollination occurs in Sarah’s flower?
After pollination, the pollen will fertilize the ovules inside the ovary. The ovary will then develop
into a fruit, and the fertilized ovules will become seeds.
