Laboratory Activity #1
BASIC SERIES CIRCUIT SET-UP FOR BREADBOARD WITH LED
VOLTAGE RATING, TESTING

Group No: _______________________ Year Level:

Date: ___________________________ Rating:

I. OBJECTIVES: At the end of the activity the student should be able

to:
a.) Identify and be familiar with the use of basic electronics components and
materials.
b.) Build a simple breadboard circuit with a singular LED and LED in a series
configuration.
c.) Properly use a digital multimeter to test the actual forward voltage of a
LED.
d.) Calculate the appropriate resistor rating to be applied in the circuit with
forward voltage known.

II. APPARATUS/MATERIALS REQUIRED:

1.) Breadboard 2.) Connecting Wires (Solid Strand Copper) - 1.0 or
1.5 mm Ф
3.) 9-V Square Battery 4.) Resistor
5.) LED 6.) Digital Multimeter
7.) Scientific Calculator 8.) Ballpen

III. PROCEDURE:

1.) Before building the circuit, the resistor rating to be used for a single LED
must be calculated by using Ohm’s Law and the diode second approximation
model. For computation, use any approximate forward voltage of a LED
depending on its color in the allowable range as shown in the “Forward
Voltage Table” below, and use 20 mA for its current rating.

2.) Once the appropriate resistor rating has been calculated, identify the
resistor from your materials that comes close to the calculated rating.
3.) Prepare the first five materials from your list and create a simple series
circuit in your breadboard, as shown in the “Initial Series Circuit” below.

4.) Once the circuit is done and checked by the instructor to be correct,
determine the actual forward voltage of the used LED by using a digital
multimeter.

LED)
5.) Once the actual forward voltage of a LED is determined, calculate the
appropriate resistor rating again by using Ohm’s Law and the diode second
approximation model, and create the same initial series circuit as shown
above with the new resistor rating (if possible). Have your new circuit
checked by the instructor.

6.) Lastly, determine the forward voltage of two LED’s and create a simple
series circuit using these. The resistor rating for this new circuit must still be
calculated using Ohm’s Law and the diode second approximation model.
Have your new circuit checked by the instructor.

IV. COMPUTATIONS:

A. Resistor Rating (Forward Voltage Approximated – 1 LED)

B. Resistor Rating (Tested Actual Forward Voltage – 1 LED)

C. Resistor Rating (Tested Actual Forward Voltage – 2 LED)
