They want to attract insects, especially butterflies. We also hope to have a pond where pupils can study frogs and fish.” Emily Wong of the school’s Green Club told us about their ‘green canteen’. ‘We've stopped using disposable knives, forks and spoons. Students who bring their own cutlery get a sticker. When they have twenty stickers, they get a badge. We've stopped throwing away so much rubbish too. We recycle all our bottles and cans? Whose fault is this? Ours. Every day people need more space, more food and more water. As people build more roads, cit and factories, animals lose the places where they live and find food. Some animals cannot live in the new man-made environment. Pollution is another problem. People make a lot of rubbish. We throw it away carelessly and pollute the Earth’s soil, water and air. This can kill animals. Animals also die at the hands of people through hunting and fishing. We kill wild animals for food, for sport and for their skin, fur, horns and shells. Sometimes people catch wild animals and sell them as pets. Sadly many of these animals die on the way to their new ‘homes’. Will our grandchildren only see animals such as pandas, tigers and rhinos in books?
