Report

You work for a leading educational publisher who wants to produce schoolbooks in your country. The
company wants to learn more about the people who will use its books and has asked you to write a
report on foreign language learning in your country. Write a report explaining:
• what languages people learn and why
• the ways in which they learn these languages, and
• make recommendations on how language learning could be improved in your country.

Foreign language learning in Malaysia

Introduction
The aim of this report is to outline the state of foreign language learning in
Malaysia and suggest ways how Malaysians can improve their language
learning experience.

The languages that Malaysians like to learn

English is by far the most popular choice as a second language among
children and adults because it is the language used for international
communication. Many adults also like to learn Japanese and Korean.

Who learns them and where

Children learn English in schools, but only as a second language. Adults who
wish to learn English can enrol in online courses via the Internet. Alternatively,
they can join a language institution taught by native speakers as well as local
teachers. Some of the most popular language schools include The British
Council, Cambridge English for Life, The Japanese Language Centre and The
Korean Language Centre.

The English Language scenario in Malaysia

Most Malaysians have a very poor command of the English Language.
• It is not the official language of the country.
• In school, students spend only a few hours a week learning English.
• They are not required to pass English in order to pass the whole
examination.
• Because it is not considered a core subject, students tend to concentrate on
more important subjects like maths and science.
• There is an acute shortage of qualified English-speaking teachers.

Most parents are aware of the importance of the English language. As a

result, they send their children for extra English language classes after school
hours in the evening or at weekends.

Recommendations
Because English is the most widely spoken language in the world and
because of the universal trend towards globalization, I suggest
• increasing the number of hours spent learning English at school.
• Native English speakers should be employed to train local teachers.
• There should be more English language programmes on TV.
• English language learning apps?
English language proficiency is necessary to keep Malaysia globally
competitive.
