The commonwealth games were held in India,
New Delhi in 2010. These games were the 19th
edition of of the commonwealth games. And it hosted around 71 athletes from all around the globe. It lasted from october 3rd until the 14th of october, the event was notable especially for its:- 1.Opening ceremony 2.Sporting events 3.Achievements 4.Controversies 5.Challenges 6.Legacy The commonwealth games heavily emphasize on values like sportsmanship and cooperation among member countries. Thus, they are often referred to as “the friendly games”. The main venue that housed this was the jawaharlal nehru stadium, this stadium also hosted the opening and closing ceremonies of the games. India’s performance was impressive because they finished second in the medals tally with 101 medals in total. The games also left a legacy of improved sports infrastructure in Delhi and increased the importance of sports in India and highlighted the issues regarding management and execution of large scale sporting events. 1. Debut and Early Years: ○ India made its debut at the Commonwealth Games (then called the British Empire Games) in 1934. ○ Wrestler Rashid Anwar won India’s first medal, a bronze, in the men’s 74 kg freestyle wrestling event. ○ Initially, medals were scarce, but things improved over time. 2.Milestones: ○ In 1958, legendary sprinter Milkha Singh secured India’s first gold medal in the men’s 440-yard event. ○ Lila Ram, a heavyweight wrestler, also won gold in the same edition. ○ Women’s participation began in 1958, with track and field athletes Stephanie D’Souza and Elizabeth Davenport. 3. Wrestling Dominance: ○ Indian wrestling gained prominence in the 1970s and 1980s, contributing significantly to medal counts. ○ Both male and female athletes excelled, with Indian women making their mark. 4.Other Sports: ○ Badminton players Ami Ghia and Kanwal Thakar Singh won India’s first women’s doubles bronze in 1978. ○ Weightlifter Raghavan Chanderasekaran clinched multiple medals in weightlifting events. ○ Pistol shooter Jaspal Rana remains India’s most successful athlete at the Commonwealth Games, with 15 medals1. 5.Overall Performance: ○ India has won a total of 564 medals (203 gold, 190 silver, 171 bronze) across various editions. ○ Shooting alone accounts for 63 gold medals. ○ At the 2022 Commonwealth Games, India secured 61 medals (22 gold, 16 silver, 23 bronze) and ranks 4th on the all-time medal table
