The Bridge of Resilience: Juan’s Story

In a remote rural village, there was a young boy named Juan. Juan is a
smart and determined boy who dreams of becoming an engineer one day. He
enjoys reading and solving math problems. One of his favorite topics is
percentages, as he sees its application in everyday life. Juan learned that
percentages could indicate the chance of rain, show discounts in shops like 50%
off, help budget monthly expenses, and many more.
Their village is divided into halves, with their school located on the other side.
Only a bridge made from bamboo connects both sides of the village, providing
all-season access to services and markets in the neighboring village. Students
walk for hours and cross the bridge to go to school.
One Saturday night, a powerful storm hit their area causing extensive
damage to the community, including the destruction of the main bridge due to
an overflowing river. The residents were saddened by what happened and knew
that the bridge must be built quickly.
Juan took the opportunity to use his knowledge in math. He called his
friends and planned to build the bridge. He explained to his friends the safest,
most effective, and quickest calculations in constructing the bridge. He
computed the costs of materials to be used, and estimated days to finish.
Bamboo is one of the materials needed and they bought it at a shop. It cost ₱2,
000 and got a discount of 40%. They’ve saved money because of the discount.
The residents gave donations to Juan to help in the expenses of building the
bridge.
Juan and his friends worked tirelessly using their knowledge and skills in
math. They faced numerous obstacles and miscalculations because of the
unexpected river flow. Despite the struggles, their resilience shone and they did
not give up. They recalculated, regrouped, and tried again. The residents
admired how resilient and determined Juan and his friends were to build the
bridge.
After days of continuous effort, Juan and his friends successfully built the
bridge and felt at peace. The residents thanked them. They appreciate the
importance of knowledge and resilience especially in times of calamities. The
people can already cross the river through the bridge they built.

Safety First

To promote safe and efficient travel on highways, the speed limit is

set to ensure the safety of all drivers on the roads and prevent accidents due
to excessive speed. In national highways, the allowable speed is typically
100km/hr. The police/traffic enforcers are ensuring traffic safety for the well-
being and safety of everyone on the road.

Miguel is driving on a highway during rush

hour. As he maneuvers
through the traffic, he encounters a sudden
downpour of rain, making the road slippery and
reducing visibility. In spite of the difficult
circumstances, Miguel remains concentrated, adjusts his speed, and keeps a
safe distance from other vehicles. He still maintains his speed not more than
60km/hr. He increases visibility by turning on his headlights and windshield
wipers, but he always uses caution while changing lanes or merging with
traffic.
