First Christian Church has been blessed by those who came before us providing financial support, spiritual leadership, our building, and our history. Once a month in this newsletter, we will highlight an endowment fund that provides regular income to benefit many of our ministries. Today we honor the Cliff & Bess Elder Endowment, a restricted endowment fund. Reflecting their love for the church and Cliffs dedication to beautifying our grounds, the Elders gift is designated for landscaping our church property. Over the past two years, this endowment has generated nearly $242 in landscaping funds. Please keep the FCC managed endowment trust in mind as you make plans for your future financial gifts and asset allocations.

The Care and Feeding of A Candle

Owen Cayton, Senior Minister [email protected] One evening, after gymnastics, as Mattai was getting back into the car he said, I really need to work on my arm strength. What an odd thing for a seven year old to say! I am sure it was a repetition of something one of his coaches saidstill, it was odd. In early December there was an in-house gymnastics meet where we got to go see what he had been working on over the past several months. It was while he was doing the rings that it became clear what he had been talking about. Every time he tried to pull himself up, he would have to strain and would go crooked. One arm was stronger than the other and it was the only thing that caused him struggle. To develop his needed strength he has to exercise his arms. What has been interesting to watch is the way that his exercise has become quite natural to him. He is constantly pushing up with his arms wherever we goon counters, in queues at fast food restaurants, basically where ever he is he finds some place to exercise his arms quite out of habit (often to the sound of his parents saying, get down!). The exercise has become a part of him, a part of his life and his play. Strengthening something takes work, it takes effort. The thing is that doing that work can also become a part of us in such a way that we do it quite naturally, so that it becomes part of us and perhaps even less like work and more like play. The New Year provides a new opportunity for us to do things differently, to strengthen something that needs to be exercised. Sometimes we make resolutions to do such things. I want to invite you to grow in your exercises that strengthen your relationships: relationships both with others and with God. Often these are called spiritual disciplines or practices. Sometimes I think we get scared away by that language. We start thinking of monks living in the desert or even just worry about one more thing that Ive got to do in my already crunched schedule. While there are some specific disciplines that have traditionally been used by people in the church, I think that anything that brings us into connection with each other and with God can become a spiritual discipline. For example, in our world of over busy schedules it is often difficult for families to sit down at a meal together; even one per week. Yet the benefits of connection and relationship of such a practice are touted over and over again. Eating dinner as a family is not what we would typically think of as a spiritual discipline. However, it can naturally encompass many of the things that spiritual disciplines do: promotes connection, prayer, provides an opportunity to learn from and teach each other. I hope that in the coming year you will find opportunities to strengthen your faith in such a way that they become naturally a part of who you are. May you and your faith grow in 2012. Shalom, Pastor Owen
