Chapter 1

INTRODUCTION

Every night, morning, or noon time it is sleeping that will aid the tiredness from

exhausting ourselves from working or doing our daily tasks and fulfilling our daily purpose in

life. Sleeping plays, a crucial part in performing the usual activities that a human must do to

simply survive, well how do we sleep? Really interesting question, to begin with, according to

www.healthline.com (2021) the article stating that sleeping is passive human activity as we sleep

our body enters two types of sleep or brain cycle type of sleep; the time we close our eyes we

enter the first stage of the so-called Non-REM (Rapid Eye Movement) Sleep in the first stage or

“Falling Asleep” part our heartbeat slows down and our body temperature drops then our whole

body starts relaxing in a few minutes the second stage of Non-REM Sleep occurs where again

our heartbeat slows down and body temperature drops but this time eye movements are not

present in our closed eyes, the third stage of Non-REM Sleep is the deepest part of sleeping state

as this stage breathing and heartbeat rate is at its slowest, no eye movements, tissue repair and

growth, cell regeneration, the immune system strengthens, and arousal is difficult to trigger this

stage is so much for sleep and definitely is the part where our body doesn’t even recognize the

passage of time. The second type of sleep is REM (Rapid Eye Movement) and there are two

kinds of REM Sleep first is phasic where eye movement is present and tonic where eye

movement is not present, in this second type of sleep eye movements becomes rapid as we sleep

and opposite from Non-REM Sleep our breathing and heart rate increases and muscles are

paralyzed yet twitches are possible as brain activity is increased this is where dreaming happens.

That is the objective. explanation of the human physiological function of closing their eyes or in

easier terms sleeping. The concept of sleeping had always been an easy wonder to people, but

they know it is something they need unconsciously, this way of resting is very much a mystery a

deep one for humans to study. All the objective explanation aside this research is rooted in
LINGUNAN NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT
F. Dulalia Street, Lingunan, Valenzuela City
another research that sparked and inspired this pursuit of learning the relationship between sleep

and the academic performance of Lingunan Senior Highschool Students.

It was last year of December 2021 when qualitative research began with the title of

“Influences of the Current Pandemic on the Physiological Status of Lingunan Senior High

School Students” was later approved and in 2022 it was completed. Learning from that research

there is a topic that was very much overlooked though it was a really good subtopic to fill in

regarding the research. The said qualitative research covered a lot of experiences and actual

narratives of physiological effects experienced by the participants including their eating schedule

and even activities performed outdoors and indoors to the extent of learning what their

preferences on multiple changes, particularly in the pandemic situation encountered by them as

students, sons, daughters, and breadwinners. It was sleeping that was not covered properly as it is

one of the physiological functions that had always been an important action that humans

perform. A small inspiration and common curiosity were behind this simple research. According

to Jorge II, Villalobos, & Nuñal,(2016) “A Descriptive Study on the Sleeping Habits and

Correlation of Sleepiness with Academic Performance in a State University-run Medical School

in the Philippines” concluded different reasons for how correlational sleeping is to the academic

performance of students some researchers even suggest a better validated questionnaire and a

longitudinal research type to thoroughly discuss and find the results of every researcher tackling

the same or almost similar concept of vigor regarding the effects of sleep on the human body and

how this relates to what humans might deal with lack of sleep or even sleeping itself. Now we

have come to this point we know how to sleep and what is behind the research topic. Why is this

research important? Same to how sleeping is important, sleeping offers quality performance of

daily activities when the recommended 8-12 hours of sleep was completed. Sleeping also lessens

the health risks that may happen when a lesser amount of sleep is acquired, and brain functions

are also affected as the brain becomes unable to process and learn or adapt to the situation of the
LINGUNAN NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL

day. (Torres, F., 2020). Some health risks of concern are high blood pressure, Immune system

weakness, poor metabolism, and even mental health factors getting affected example such as

depression. These given concerns are very much observable, then maybe getting enough sleep is

not just needed but rather essential to how we live. But life disagrees with all of this “avoiding

negative effects of less sleep” or “ignoring the importance of sleeping” even if we do so care and

demand having sufficient resting time in our schedule the errands we need to run is just the

biggest hindrance for having the right amount of sleep as well as having the best sleep quality to

comfortably relax. Many ideas may be connected to become a reason why we don’t get the

proper amount and quality of sleep. First, people are just too busy being hardworking and

productive people in their lives obviously because it is the time running and not us controlling

the deadlines. Secondly, there are already multiple bad habits or other interests’ people do

become the reason their schedule gets cramped up. Third, it’s just the busy atmosphere we live in

shortly, the economy, industry, society, and institutions demand more improvement over time in

easier words the world just gets bigger.

All of those might make sense to the mystery of sleeping as why it is considered

important, yet we never did care or consider the time of others like our co-workers and

acquaintances. Narrowing the idea, this research aims for helping the school in figuring out how

the institution itself projects or how their academic flow as a school affect including the

adjustments or use of the lesson plans and curriculum as how it influences sleep number, quality,

schedule, and experience of the students in relation to their performance in academic-related

activities and issues. Descriptive nonexperimental survey research will not be conducting costly

true experimental research where such instruments may become of help in providing the desired

and convincing results. The survey research will guarantee well-elaborated data ensuring the

efficient presentation of its goal to the participants and the goal to provide concrete evidence in

helping the school improve in whatever possible ways the research may contribute to. As simple
LINGUNAN NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT
F. Dulalia Street, Lingunan, Valenzuela City
as the research may sound it takes another step in discovering another puzzle piece to the

mystery of sleeping but this time this is an enlightened and awakened version for the Filipinos

and locals near the institutions. This research also looks forward to suggesting a hypothesis that

may be a solution to be tested or proven inside

the survey research which may give suggestions to make efficient and effective ways of dealing

with the negative data gathered throughout the research as well. The research setting will be in

the best condition as face–to–face classes resumption is active on the field, the research study

setting will focus on the senior high school department. The study desires productive and

punctual data collection and data interpretation to properly deliver the results and conclusion to

the institution as the research will serve as a strong foundation and reference for future

researchers. In the making of this research, more time will be spent, and more sleep will be

sacrificed for the betterment and development of the Lingunan Senior High School.

Background of the Study

Research had always been concluding different cases of results regarding the

correlation and effects of sleep on a person, it has been sleeping being our companion to

providing energy as sleeping in simpler terms is a strength in resupplying passive activity to us.

After discussing the nature of sleep, how does sleep affect us? In the research titled “The Effects

of Sleep Quality on Students’ Academic Achievement” (Rostam Jalali et al., 2020) A cross-

sectional study indicates that there is no significant difference in the variety of both low-grade

and high-grade students in sleep quality, but there are findings where both groups showing

severe sleep disturbances. The study concluded that the different kinds of sleep disturbance are

what affect the general health, social status, and academic performance of the students.

Basically, the quality of sleep being discussed is pointing out that comfort and number of sleep

whether the student in the example is lacking sleep themself have no relationship with how they

attain academic achievement. Academic achievement and academic performance are two

different things. In the international cross-sectional study, it is academic achievement getting

tackled as how students acquire their position or standing in what level of intelligence, they have

in general including comparing what they are to other students; for the study considers high-

grade and low-grade students included as variables to study which is different in this research

where academic performance will be about comfort, amount, and schedule. The cross-sectional

research finds out what is related and expected in this research where their findings interpret that

quantity of sleep is independent factor that negatively affects the academic performance of the

students.

The Philippines is also known for having a low Intelligence quotient, ranking 57 in

World Data ranking with an intelligence quotient of an average of 86. While the standard or

average intelligence quotient is around 90-109. Though the intelligence quotient is still
LINGUNAN NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT
F. Dulalia Street, Lingunan, Valenzuela City
theoretical and depends on the person’s capability and broad ways of itself dealing with the

certainty of the faced problems, maybe the Philippines does actually face an educational crisis.

However, “The Correlation of Sleep and Academic Performance” (Sygaco, 2021) conducted at

Siliman University, shows that Sleep quality plays a major role in how students perform in their

academic studies. Through different reasons, it is founded that social media as a past time plays a

partial role in sleep deprivation which also being the sole reason that lessens the students’

possible required sleep amount to attain quality sleep, research shows that 6-7 hours of sleep is

taken by the participating students as it lacks 1 -4 hours to reach the average amount of 8-10

hours of sleep. The local research also found negative or no relationship with how the students

take a different amount of sleep regarding their general averages but shows that students have

different activities to fulfill in their lives in terms of managing the amount of sleep they will take,

as less amount of sleep still risk their health and possible chances of declined thinking in

performing daily activities the students can get away sacrificing amount of sleep to attain desired

grades. With the given results of the supporting researches, this gave inspiration to conduct this

particular research that pursues to understand the nature of sleep with its relation to how can

students manage their time and have a better academic performance.

Local

Based on the study “The Correlation of Sleep and Academic Performance” (Sygaco,

2021) where the research was conducted at Siliman University and the respondents were grade

12 students of the strand Science, Technology, Engineering, Agriculture, and Mathematics

(STEM) they tackled the sleep deprivation issue as the given questionnaire also focused on the

same matter particularly sleep deprivation. The research shows that students have habits of

spending time on digital technology habits or activities, these kinds of past time tend to lessen

the properly acquired sleep hours of students. The results show that there are less than 2 hours of

sleep that students are missing in terms of the right amount of sleep that a human, though it is not

only about technology habits it is also because of the school related activities such as quizzes or

exams they are sacrificing time into. Meanwhile, an additional knowledge added is about

Filipinos encountering problems when sleeping (K Ballesteros, 2021) Most of the people in the

reference for data are people who work now. In the case of the blog, people are known to have a

variety of obligations and responsibilities and proceed to live during the pandemic. The

importance of sleep relies on how people manage the criticisms in their chosen field of

professionalism. The normal actions we do in our daily life are what make the people realize that

either life is useless, or life is meaningful. However, on the original article “A Descriptive Study

on the Sleeping Habits and Correlation of Sleepiness with Academic Performance in the State

University-run Medical School in The Philippines” (George, 2020) just the same context as

Sygaco’s research as it proves a similar hypothesis as proof that the point that students acquire

sleep with missing 2-3 hours there is also no correlation in the two variables. The demands of

the school are what burden the students in terms of not having enough time for rest. Another

reason for the students’ sleep deprivation is due to the use of digital technology as a pastime.

According to Philips (2020) survey, Filipinos have one of the highest rates of sleep deprivation

in Asia; 46% of Filipinos do not get enough sleep. The pandemic has undeniably altered our
LINGUNAN NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT
F. Dulalia Street, Lingunan, Valenzuela City
daily routines, including our sleep habits. Despite the time savings from skipping the daily

commute, it is clear that many individuals still face multiple challenges in getting good and

sufficient quality sleep each night. Getting enough sleep is essential for productivity and overall

wellness, so it is crucial that individuals facing persistent sleep issues take action to get them

diagnosed and treated for serious underlying sleep-related chronic conditions. For those

accustomed to using their mobile phones in bed, it is the last thing they do before falling asleep

and the first thing they do when waking up. Most use it for entertainment, charging their phone

overnight next to their bed, and over one in five even respond to texts and calls that wake them

up. Most respondents who use their phone before falling asleep admit that it leads them to fall

asleep later than they would like to, due to scrolling through social media, watching videos,

checking emails, texting, or reading news about the COVID-19 pandemic. Worry and stress rank

as the top reason for APAC adults’ lack of sleep, as well as their mobile devices such as phones

and tablets and sleeping environment (Philips, 2020).

On the other hand, Filipinos in general believe that they need to keep themselves healthy

to prevent illness. However, the study revealed that their actions do not always align with their

health goals, as many still admit to engaging in unhealthy habits. The disconnect between what

respondents believe they should be doing, and their actual behavior is influenced by barriers that

include lack of time, the cost of healthy meals and fitness activities, the influence of their social

circles and environment, as well as the need to cope with stress. These evolving times have

opened our eyes to the importance of health and wellness, and importantly, made many Filipinos

appreciate the value of insurance protection. While Filipinos are universally aware of the

importance of staying healthy, we saw that their behaviors are largely influenced by fears and

worries, including concern for their family, and feeling financially unprepared for illnesses. This

study aims to shed light on how they can overcome those worries through financial and health
LINGUNAN NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT

protection. Filipinos also consider being a burden to their family among their top worries. Losing

a loved one is also high on their list of fears. (Ordinario, 2020).

Sleep quality is common in medical students and is associated with a number of

negative health outcomes. However, the prevalence estimates of poor sleep quality in medical

students vary widely across studies. We this conducted a meta-analysis of the prevalence of poor

sleep quality and its mediating factors in medical students and he was a large proportion of

college students are sleep deprived, regularly getting less rest than they need each night and.

Sleep is not only a state of inactivity that allows the body to rest but an active renewal period that

prepares the whole body for new life and has restorative processes such as learning or memory

consolidation and difficulty than domestic students because they also need to deal with the

challenges associated with moving to a new relationship between stress (Fadipe 2017). One of

the biggest problems faced by every student during the rush time in doing homework and

activities are that having poor sleep can affect academic performance. Every student needs long-

term sleep, it is important for the recovery of injuries to the central nervous system. It can

improve cognitive performance, quality of life, fatigue severity, and overall well-being. Having

trouble sleeping can be considered the biggest problem for every student, but what exactly is a

sleep problem? Lack of sleep occurs because of the reason that students prioritize finishing the

tasks first and then forget the time of rest. The lack of sleep also causes poor physical

development, students being pressured by what they are doing, and this leads to depression

because they cannot handle stress. They also put their academic situation under pressure, and

even on vacation they still manage to make time for learning.

The depression of students causes effect their actions which also affects their academic

performance (Taiwan, 2015). As we know sleeping habits are the practiced number of hours of
LINGUNAN NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT
F. Dulalia Street, Lingunan, Valenzuela City
night sleep for a long period of time. This includes the time of night sleep and bedroom rest.

Sleeping is not only something that feels good but also something necessary. When you are a

student, your habits concerning sleep may be different from before. This may be so for various

reasons, but it is common that students tend to study a great deal before an exam or a deadline

for an assignment, and therefore might need to work late at night. However, you are not so

efficient if you are tired when studying. Both sleep and rest are required in order for your body to

be healthy and for your brain to be able to digest what it absorbs. Between six to nine hours of

sleep per night is recommended to give the body the recovery it needs (Mid Sweden University,

2019). Every interviewed student mentioned feeling tired almost all the time, especially during

the week. During weekends they could catch up with sleep and they felt a little less tired,

however, still tired. Early school time, irregular work hours, and stress were the most

contributing factors to the bad night of sleep and therefore to tiredness (Henna, 2018). In other

research findings, the studies have suggested that insufficient sleep, increased frequency of short-

term sleep, and going to sleep late and getting up early affect the learning capacity, academic

performance, and neurobehavioral functions. Previous studies have indicated that the quantity of

sleep reported by individuals as delayed or inappropriate sleep, waking up too late, especially at

weekends, and daytime sleepiness is associated with compromised academic performance in

children and adults. Students are particularly at risk of developing sleep disorders and the

development of the disorder among them has a negative effect on their academic performance

across different grades (Jalali R et al.2020.
