[edit]Branding

and marketing

Nescaf is a brand introduced by the Nestl company. Nescaf can be traced back to the 1930s.[3] In the US, the Nescaf name was used on its products up until the 1960s, Later, Nestl introduced a new brand in the United States called Taster's Choice, which supplanted Nescaf for many years. Taster's Choice was also introduced into Canada at the same time, and continues to be sold as a separate product, that is branded as superior to Nescafe, and is higher priced. In the United Kingdom, a television advertisement campaign starring Anthony Head and Sharon Maughan ran in 12 instalments between 1987 and 1993.[4] The first 11 episodes were released as a promotional compilation video called Love Over Gold in 1993. A novelisation of the same name written by Susan Moody (under the pseudonym Susannah James) was released in the same year.[5] In 2003, the company reintroduced the Nescaf brand in the US, and the product is now known as Nescaf Taster's Choice. It is sold in US supermarkets such as Safeway in both glass and plastic packaging. While the Nescaf brand was created for soluble coffee, it has subsequently been used as an umbrella brand on a number of instant coffee products, including, in the UK, Gold Blend andBlend 37 freeze-dried coffees. In 2006, Nescaf launched the new coffee machine system "Dolce Gusto" ("sweet taste" in Italian). The system allows consumers to make various styles of coffees themselves (Cappuccino, Latte Macchiato, Espresso, Lungo, etc.). Additionally, hot chocolate and cold drinks can be prepared with the machine. The machines are now sold in more than 15 countries worldwide. Unlike other Nescaf products, most Dolce Gusto beverages use roasted and ground coffee, instead of instant coffee. Other marketing activity included Experiential Marketing/Relationship Marketing, which led Nescaf to become the headline sponsor of Good Food show 2008 at Birmingham NEC as part of their campaign to drive awareness of the increased Nescaf collection. 95% of consumers at this popular event rated the Nescaf Collection stand the best at the show.[6] Nescaf used advanced 3D technology to engage their consumers, led by iD Experiential. In the UK in August 2009, Nescaf unveiled a 43m ad campaign for Nescaf, focusing on the purity of its coffee and featuring the strapline "Coffee at its brightest".[7]
[edit]Lawsuits

In February 2005, the Associated Press reported Nestl lost a lawsuit and was ordered to pay $15.6 million US to Russell Christoff for using an image of him without his permission on their Taster's Choice label for approximately five years (19982003).[8] The $15.6 million judgment was subsequently reversed in its entirety

by the California Court of Appeal.[9] On October 31, 2007 The California Supreme Court, with a vote of 60, granted review. English band Muse successfully sued Nescaf in 2003 when its song "Feeling Good" was used in a television advert without permission, donating the 500,000 compensation toOxfam.[10]

Bescaf Brazilian coffee meets Swiss science. Thats how NESCAF was born. It all started in 1930, when the Brazilian government asked the NESTL company to create coffee cubes. The Brazilians goal was to use their large coffee surplus. Eight years of research resulted in a coffee that could be made by simply adding water but which retained the coffee's natural flavors. Soluble coffee was introduced to the world on April 1, 1938. The new product was named NESCAF a combination of NESTL and caf. During World War II, it became the staple beverage of the US armed forces and, from then on, its popularity really took off. NESCAF has become the favorite coffee of many generations all over the world. NESCAF has over 70 years of expertise in selecting the best beans, blending, roasting and extracting the flavor of coffee. Our commitment to quality is tested millions of times every day by millions of coffee lovers around the world.

The story of NESTL coffee begins in Vevey, a small town in Switzerland, where a pharmacist named Henri Nestl was searching for a healthy, economical alternative to breastfeeding for mothers who could not feed their infants at the breast. In 1866, his solution was ready. He called it Farine Lactee Henri Nestl, and it soon became popular in much of Europe. It was the birth of one of the worlds favorite food brands. The NESTL company soon expanded into chocolate and other food products, but it wasnt until 1930 that they put their expertise into coffee. That year, the Brazilian Coffee Institute approached NESTL with an exciting challenge: develop a new coffee product that would help Brazil reduce its large coffee surplus. Eight years of painstaking research produced a soluble powder that revolutionized coffee-drinking habits worldwide. In April 1938, NESCAF was launched. The name came from the combination of NESTL and caf. NESCAF became an instant success. Continuous innovations have extended the NESCAF range and consistently high quality has made it a favorite of many generations all around the world.

Why is caffeine so important? Because of its mild stimulating properties on the body and mind. Caffeine is the stuff that perks you up when you drink a cup of coffee. The body absorbs it rapidly, usually within 30 minutes, and its effects may last for 2-5 hours. 300 mg of caffeine per day is considered moderate caffeine consumption for most people. This translates to about 5 cups of soluble coffee or 3-4 cups of brewed coffee. However, some individuals may choose to consume decaffeinated coffee, tea, or soft drinks, especially later in the day. Caffeine was discovered by two different scientists almost at the same time. It was first isolated in coffee by a German chemist in 1820. In 1821 a French chemist, working independently, discovered the same element and gave it its name.

The effects of caffeine have been the subject of considerable discussion and research, due in no small part to the popularity of coffee, which is acknowledged as being one of the worlds favorite drinks. Thousands of scientific studies have been published on the effects of coffee and caffeine on health, the overall conclusion of which confirms that coffee drinking in moderation (45 cups per day) is perfectly safe for the general population. Caffeine has a stimulating effect on both physical and mental performance so it is ideal to take it in the morning, during the afternoon work break or in the evening for a long study night.

NESCAF soluble coffee contains about 65 mg of caffeine per 175 ml (6 fl. oz.) cup. The amount of caffeine per cup of coffee depends on the amount of coffee you put in your cup and there are differences in the strength of the coffee blends in each country. How does this amount compare to other products that contain caffeine? Tea Brewed (6 fl oz/175 ml): 20 - 90 mg Tea Instant (6 fl oz/175 ml): 24 - 31 mg Soft Drink (8 fl oz/235 ml cola type): 30 - 71 mg Chocolate Milk (8 fl oz/235 ml): 2 - 7 mg Caffeine content based on information from the U.S. FDA and National Coffee Association.
