Land Use Pattern in India


Objectives
The learning objectives for this Lesson are listed below.
Discuss land use patterns in India.
Recognise the relationship between geographical factors (i.e., landforms, climate and soil) and land use patterns in India.

Introduction
Start the class by asking students why land is valuable. Get students to think about the uses of land i.e., fields, pastures,
settlements. Discuss how land is utilized in different ways and how its usage is dependent on geographical factors such as
landforms, soil and climate.Write the topic on the blackboard and inform students that they will learn more about the
categories of land use.

Teaching Strategy
Students will discuss land use pattern in India.

Get students to brainstorm about the different ways that land can be utilized. Then, explain the meaning of utilization of
land and the ways in which it’s done.
Get students to think about how land use pattern has changed over the decades. Ask them to think of reasons that could
have led to the shift. Explain that the land use pattern in India depends on the topography of land as well as human
factors. Encourage students to trace the change in land use that has occurred over the decades and get them to create a
timeline.
Conduct theLand Use Patterns in Indiaactivityto help students understand the patterns of land use observed in India.

Ask students to create a picture album showing the different types of land use. They should collect pictures of land under
forests; pastures;land occupied by rivers, canals and lakes; land used for the construction of buildings, roads and
railways,etc.The pictures should be labelled according to the categories described in the topic.The albums should be
displayed in the class.

Ask students to interpret the phrase ‘Son of the Soil’ through art, literature, performing arts and so on.They should share their
thoughts with the class.
