 Case 1: One Side / Line to be partly or totally unknown

Solution:
1. Compute latitude and departure for known sides
2. Add + / - lat & departure
3. Find the difference in + / - lat. & dep. which is the +/- lat & +/- dep
of the missing line
4. Compute for the direction & distance of the missing line
5. To check, recompute for the area of the lot
 Case 2: Two adjacent sides / lines partly unknown

 Case 2-A: Directions of both lines missing / unknown & distances are known
Solution:
1. Draw/ sketch the figure from the given of known lines (area is given)
2. Close the figure with an auxiliary line using the known line & solve for its
direction & distance by Case 1
3. Look for the triangle formed by the auxiliary line and the missing sides
4. Compute for any one interior angle by cosine law
5. Compute for the other interior angles by sine law & the 3rd interior angle
from the relationships: the sum of interior angle = 180°
6. Compute for the missing directions of the unknown lines
7. To check, recompute for the area of the lot
 Case 2: Two adjacent sides / lines partly unknown

 Case 2-B: Distances of both lines missing / unknown & directions are known

Solution:
1. Draw/ sketch the figure from the given of known lines
2. Close the figure with an auxiliary line and the known line & solve for its
direction & distance by Case 1
3. Look for the triangle formed by the auxiliary line and the missing sides
4. Solve for the interior angles using the given directions & the third interior
angle from the relationships: the sum of interior angle = 180°
5. Solve for the missing distance by sine law
6. To check, recompute for the area of the lot
 Case 2: Two adjacent sides / lines partly unknown

 Case 2-C: Direction of one line is known – distance unknown; distance of 2nd line
given – direction unknown
Solution:
1. Draw/ sketch the figure from the given of known lines
2. Assume 2 position: close the figure with an auxiliary line – solve by case 1
3. Find triangle formed by auxiliary line and missing lines
4. Solve for the interior angle from the given directions & the other angle by sine
law
5. Solve for the 3rd interior angles from the relationships: the sum of interior angle
= 180°
6. Solve for the missing distance – line by sine law
7. Solve for the missing direction using the interior angles & a given direction
8. To check, recompute for the area of the lot
 Case 3: Two non-adjacent lines missing

 Case 3-A: Distances of both lines are missing – directions are known
Solution:
1. Draw/ sketch the figure from the given known lines
2. Bring the known lines together
3. Close the known lines with an auxiliary line and determine its direction &
distance by case 1
4. Look for the triangle formed by auxiliary line & missing lines
5. Compute the interior angles of the triangle using the given directions &
the third interior angle from the relationship: the sum of interior angle =
180°
6. Solve for missing distance – line by sine law
7. To check, recompute for the area of the lot
 Case 3: Two non-adjacent lines missing

 Case 3-B: Directions of Both Non-adjacent lines are missing – distances are
known
Solution:
1. Draw/ sketch the figure from the given known lines
2. Bring the known lines together
3. Close the figure using an auxiliary line and solve for its direction &
distance by case 1
4. Look for the triangle formed by auxiliary line & missing sides
5. Solve for any one interior angle by cosine law & other angles by sine law
6. Solve for the missing directions using the direction of auxiliary line &
interior angles.
7. To check, recompute for the area of the lot
 Case 3: Two non-adjacent lines missing

 Case 3-C: The direction of one line is missing – distance is known & the distance
of the other line missing – direction is known
Solution:
1. Draw/ sketch the figure from the given known lines
2. Bring the known lines together
3. Close the figure using an auxiliary line and solve for its direction &
distance by case 1
4. Look for the triangle formed by auxiliary line & missing sides
5. Solve for interior angle
6. Solve for the missing distance and directions
7. To check, recompute for the area of the lot
