Editor’s letter
Summer’s not quite over yet, despite what the UK
forecast might be saying, and though this isn’t
technically a ‘summer issue’, what better way to enjoy
those last few weeks of changeable weather with a pint
of your favourite tipple in hand?
But before you head off to grab a cold one from the
fridge, we’ve got a far superior alternative that’s infused
with tech: three of the best beer machines to help you
pour the perfect pint, from the comfort of your own
home. I’m sure you’ll all agree that fresh from the tap is

The best new tech heading your way

GOOGLE
PIXEL 9 PRO
From £999, google.com

Google’s position in the smartphone game has always

been one of setting a baseline. Nothing much has
changed: the Pixel 9 Pro remains the suggestion to
the market of what an Android phone should be. The
question is whether Google still has control of that
baseline, or if its baby has now grown up and begun
to forge its own path.
One clear note from Google’s engineers this time
around is that size is important. You’re no longer tied
to the 6.8-inch heft of the previous Pixel Pro – while
that size is still available in the form of the Pixel 9 Pro
XL (from £1,099), you can now pick up the non-XL
version at a more pocketable 6.3 inches. The latter is,
bar its battery and screen resolution, essentially the
same hardware as its big brother, only in miniature. CAMERA
Speaking of things that are the same, Google is UPGRADES

THE AI ADVANTAGE
Google really wants you to use AI. AI on your screenshots,
pulling out salient information automatically, AI on your
photos through new boosts to its already special editing
tools, and AI in your everyday life, with a year’s access to
Google Gemini included with every Pixel Pro purchase.

NO PRO?
Missing very little from the Pro
models, the standard 6.3in Pixel 9
doesn’t seem like a bad deal. It’s
cheaper starting at £799, redesigned
from the ground up for extra
sleekness, it also includes the Tensor
G4 and the new 48MP ultrawide
second camera, and its OLED screen
is 35% brighter than before.

PIXEL 9 PRO FOLD

From £1,749, google.com

Meeting the new trend of foldable phones

which work just as well from their front screens,
you could probably get away with leaving the
thinner, fancier, 6.3in Google folder stowed for
most of its life. Open it up, though, and you’ll
find a far brighter flexible 8in display, and that’s
always going to be a selling point. Space
reasons mean the Pro Fold’s cameras aren’t
quite up to the spec of the non-folding Pro,
but the power’s all here otherwise – and
there’s a lot more dual-screen functionality like
translations and video calls to really hammer
that folding design home. It comes in two
colours, Porcelain and Obsidian. There’s a new
hinge, too, and while we shouldn’t really get
excited about hinges, they’re never more
relevant than on a folding phone.

EVO ONE
£1,299, cambridgeaudio.com

There are few brands we trust to deliver the

goods as much as Cambridge Audio, so this
relatively affordable all-in-one streaming
speaker basically has no choice but to be great.
It squeezes a full 14 drivers into its walnut-
topped rectangular frame, blasting your audio
from the front, sides and rear to fill the room.
It’ll hook up to HDMI, it’ll connect to your
turntable, it’ll interface with every streaming
service that matters – not, perhaps, a unique
set of skills, but certainly the set that’s required
for a device like this. And the price? Well, in the
company, it’s really quite competitive, and
considering that this is basically the only device

It’s like the 1980s all over again, except this

time it might actually be good. KM5 – Japanese
manufacturer of wacky audio devices like the
CP1 Instant Disk wall-mounted CD player and,
er, the CP2, which is the same thing with an
integrated speaker – remembers the good old
days when headphones were mere suggestions
of sound held together by a scalp-slicing metal
arc. Thus it has resurrected the form, switching
out the vibrating membranes of cheap
Walkmen of old for significant 40mm drivers,
adding Bluetooth 5.4 support where once was
an easy-tangled wire, squeezing in a 12-hour
battery, and making hipsters everywhere very
happy. Or at least they’ll be happy once they’ve
worked out how to make these work with their
period-authentic portable cassette player. Given
the lack of a jack, that might not be so easy.

T3 SAYS: It’s hip to be square.

£70, casio.co.uk

The very definition of stealth from Casio, a

company that knows what its audience likes.
That being the classic watches they lusted after
when they were at school, as well as things
with Bluetooth in them. Thus this under-the-
radar combo, tapping (and only slightly
increasing the size of) the styling of the vintage
A168W-1 and pulling in the smartphone
connectivity functions previously developed for
certain models of the company’s chunkier and
still-desirable G-Shock line. This brings in
automatic time adjustment without the need to
fiddle with its tiny buttons, which does ruin the
fun a little, as well as step tracking represented
by a progress bar and sent to Casio’s app.
Simple it may be, but that might be all you
need to track your progress – all without the
need to resort to new fangled smart wristwear.

FRIEND
£79, friend.com

These kinds of products are inevitable, aren’t

they? Friend is a frivolous AI thing. It’s about
the size and shape of a Tamagotchi, you wear
it around your neck, it listens in to your
conversations and the like, and an AI agent
running on your phone gives you personalised,
matey responses. Nothing’s stored, they say,
and everything’s encrypted, so that should
quash the heebie-jeebies a little. Perhaps most
interesting to us at T3 Towers is the fact that
there appears to be a beef forming, as there’s
actually another neck-based AI wearable out
there called Friend. The alternative, £56 from
basedhardware.com, seems to have a far more
practical bent to it – it still remembers
everything, but uses what it hears to build
to-do lists and transcribe meetings. Just goes
to show: you can choose your Friends.

£1,499, irobot.co.uk

The proposed Amazon buyout might have

fizzled, but iRobot isn’t letting that get it
down. In fact, the company has redoubled its
efforts, and the launch of the Roomba Combi
10 Max and its AutoWash dock has put a smile
back on its collective face. It takes the all-in-
one floor cleaner to the next level, not only
charging itself and emptying itself, but cleaning
its own mop pad completely automatically. If
you have particularly mucky hard floors it can
vacuum and mop in the same pass, and that’s
not the only upgrade: iRobot reckons the new
brain of the 10th-gen Roomba is now seven
times faster at mapping your home and
specifically recognising your kitchen, while its
Dirt Detective function is even quicker at
seeking out filth and dealing with it.

PERFECTDRAFT PRO PRODUCT 01:

PERFECT
DRAFT PRO
The premium choice for fastidious beer
drinkers who want their pints chilled
he top-of-the-range PerfectDraft Pro is by far

T
the most advanced beer dispenser on the
market. While the cheaper model could only
chill to 3ºC, the Pro offers you total control
over the temperature between 0°C to 12°C. This might not
sound like much of a big deal, but beer connoisseurs will
choke on their pork scratchings if you serve their beer too
warm, or too cold. To bring out the hoppy flavour some
IPAs need marginally warmer (5ºC for instance) pouring
conditions. If this sounds like a chat you love to have in
the pub, then only the Pro machine will do.
The PerfectDraft Pro machine is considerably larger
and heavier than both the Pinter and Philips model, and
will command the entire depth of a standard worktop,
especially as it needs a bit of space for air flow. Sat
side-by-side in our test kitchen, the Pro looks
cumbersome in comparison. The extra dimensions do
mean it has a simpler loading mechanism, however - you
simply slide the keg and tapping unit into position and
close the door - and a more powerful cooler. As a result,
beer can hit the ideal temperature in as little as 10 hours
(less if you pre-chill). It’s only a small detail, but the drip
tray can also be retracted too, which keeps things tidy.
The other standout difference here is the Wi-Fi
connectivity and complete app control. Once you register

you can then track and adjust the temperature of the keg

you’re running low. It’s clever, works well and gives the
fastidious beer lover just that bit more control. If however
all you crave after a long week (okay, day) at work is a cold
lager (ideal temperature 3ºC) the extra smart features will
be fairly redundant. Yes, it also cools a bit quicker, but it
takes up considerably more space in the kitchen.
As for pouring, it uses the same design as the Philips
model we discuss on page 57, and as such, pours
brilliantly when you get the hang of it. Our first few
attempts were a little froth-heavy, but not for long.
When you consider the combination of the beer
quality, cooling consistency and pouring brilliance,
there’s no denying that the PerfectDraft Pro is the best
beer dispenser on the market. But it is also £100 more
than the Philips model, which is the equivalent of buying

PRODUCT 02: PINTER 3

PINTER 3
A simple home brewing kit that offers
beer that is impressively drinkable

ow on its third generation unit - the second

N
of which was recalled due to a few units
exploding - this East London based brand has
learned from their mistakes and created a
brilliantly simple home brewing system that produces
beer we’re more than happy to drink. There’s a deep
satisfaction in brewing your own lager, stout, session ale
or even super strong 7% craft style DIPA.
The Pinter kit consists of everything you need to brew,
store and pour 10 pints of your chosen beer. There’s 22
options available, with prices from £14.99 for house brews
to £22 for collaborations with breweries including Yeastie
Boys and Signature Brew. Each Pinter Pack contains a
purifier sachet, beer syrup, yeast and in some cases hop
oil. That’s as little as £1.50 a pint, although you’re
obviously absorbing labour, water and refrigeration costs.
The unit is made of robust plastic, and looks the
business. Thanks to a comprehensive companion app,
there’s no need for you to understand the complexities of
the brewing process in order to get the best results. As a
step-by-step guide it’s one of the best we’ve used, with
clear instructions, videos and plenty of hand-holding.
We decided to give the Yeastie Boys Bigmouth Remixed
Session IPA (4.5% abv) a try and, aside from having to
shake the whole unit to mix the syrup and cold water, it
was a genuinely painless process. The painful bit,
however, was waiting for the beer to brew. This is a

two-stage process which, in this instance, requires
a minimum of six days brewing and three days
conditioning in the fridge. There’s a diary setting in the
app which counts down the various stages of the process,
and once brewed it stays fresh for up to 30 days, although
it will start to lose any carbonation after a week.
It’s an investment in time and effort for 10 pints, but
the beer was a genuine surprise. As well as the fruity and
refreshing Bigmouth IPA, we visited Pinter and sampled a
few other brews including a delicious En Casa Mexican
lager and a couple of soon-to-be launched ales. While you
don’t get mainstream larger levels of fizz, the beer is
deliciously fresh, with fizz and flavour.
It does take up a huge amount of space in the average
fridge, though, and will stay there for weeks on end as it
ferments, conditions and gets ultimately consumed. If
you’ve already got a drinks fridge, or regularly keep ten
cans of beer in the fridge anyway, this is perfect, but for
those people short on chiller space it might be awkward, At no stage – whether we were purifying it before brewing, adjusting the

PHILIPS PERFECTDRAFT PRODUCT 03:

PHILIPS
PERFECTDRAFT
Compact and easy to use, this elegant
option stores and pours pints like a pro
he original Philips mini-cask beer dispensing

T
machine has been around for a few years
now, but given the impressive choice of
PerfectDraft kegs now available and a recent
drop in price to just £199 it’s a cracking choice, and the
best option for most people.
Before we get to the machine itself, we need to talk
about beer. A few years ago (under the BeerHawk
branding) you could get Stella, Corona and if you were
desperate, Bud Lite, but today there’s 50+ mini kegs
available, with beers including Leffe, Corona, Tennants,
and Orchard Pig cider, plus more crafty offerings from
Leffe, BrewDog, Camden, Vocation and Tiny Rebel.
The kegs hold 6 litres (10.5 pints) and cost from £35.90
(£2.76 per pint), which isn’t bargain priced, but - and
we were as surprised as anyone - the pour from the
PerfectDraft machine is as good as you’ll find in any pub.
All this would count for nothing if the dispenser didn’t
deliver, but thankfully it’s a brilliant pint pourer that’s
simple to set up. Each keg comes with a new tapping
device that slots inside the supplied head unit and with
a click and a whoosh you’re ready to chill. The keg slots
neatly in the machine, and once turned on you get a
digital read-out telling you the temperature, the beer’s
freshness, and importantly how much you’ve got left.

It’s the dispenser’s ability

to pour a perfect pub
pint that has us hooked
If you have time, pre-chilling kegs in the fridge will
save hours cooling in the machine, and if you’re having a
party, we’d recommend having a spare keg chilling just in
case, as 10.5 pints doesn’t go far when thirsty friends are
visiting. Chilling without pre-cooling takes a minimum
of 12 hours, so plan ahead carefully.
We kicked off our rigorous tasting with Tiny Rebel
Clwb Tropica (£40 for six litres/10.5 pints). The PerfectDraft
app - there’s no remote control, just advice - told us the
perfect serving temperature was 4°C, but in reality, we
didn’t notice the difference on a hot sunny day. The Pro
machine can be set to the perfect temperature, but we’re
not sure most casual drinkers will notice the difference.
But it’s the dispenser’s ability to pour a perfect pub
pint that has us hooked. Yes, you need to follow the
instructions to avoid a glass full of foam, but with a bit of
practice (oh no, what a chore!) it’s easy. And the beer
tastes just as it should, and all without the shocking
$QDGGLWLRQDOEHQHĆWLVWKDWWKHNHJVFDQEHVHQWEDFNIUHHWR3HUIHFW'UDIW prices, sticky carpets and opinionated old sod at the bar
and each time you do you get a £5 towards your next purchase you’ll find down the pub.
