B = {1, 4, 5, 9, 12, 15}. Find n(A ∪ B)′ .
(b) If X and Y are sets. Let ξ be the universal set. Simplify the following:
i. (X ∪ Y ) ∩ (X ∩ Y ).
ii. (X ∩ ξ)′ .
(c) State whether the following is true or false:
i. B ∩ A ⊆ B.
ii. B ⊆ A ∪ B.
(d) Le A, B and C be sets. Prove the following identity stating carefully which of
the set laws you are using at each stage of the proof;
(C ∪ A) ∩ (B ∪ A) = A ∪ (B ∩ C).
(e) In a survey, 30 respondents are asked on their preference on two soccer stars
namely Dan Kumwenda (D) and Adam Mhango (A). 15 respondents support
Dan, 13 support Adam while 23 support Dan or Adam. Find
i. n(D ∩ A).
ii. n(D ∪ A)′ .
(f) In a survey, 100 people were students and 720 owned a video recorder; 794 people
owned a video recorder or were students. How many students owned a video
recorder?
