Practical 3: Investigating burning

Magnesium
When Magnesium burns it combines with oxygen to form magnesium oxide. Some of the oxide is lost as
smpke, which rises into the air.

The aim of this experiment is to find the change in mass when a 2cm piece of magnesium ribbon is
burned completely to form magnesium oxide.

Equipment:

Eye protection gear, watch glass, small ruler, magnesium ribbon, sand paper, spirit lamp, tongs, scissors,
match box, electronic balance.

Method:

1. Measure the mass of the watch glass and the piece of magnesium ribbon.
2. Wearing eye protection, hold a 2 cm strip of cleaned magnesium inflame and allow it to ignite.
3. Allow all the ash from the burning magnesium to drop into the watch glass.
4. Measure the mass of the watch glass + ash.
5. Calculate the change in mass when magnesium converts to magnesium oxide.

Results:

Record your results in the following table.

Group 1 2 3 4 5 6
Mass of watch
glass+Mg (g)
Mass of watch
glass+Mg oxide
(g)
Change in mass
(g)
Average change
in mass (g)

Analysis of Results:

1. Why must the magnesium ribbon be cleaned before burning?

2. Identify possible sources of error.
3. Identify any anomalous result in the experiment.
4. Suggest a reason for this anomalous result.
5. Why is it important to record several readings?
6. Why is it important to calculate average?
Practical 3: Investigating burning
Magnesium
7. Write a word equation for the reaction taking place in this experiment.
8. Write the IUPAC formula for magnesium oxide.
9. Calculate the percentage increase in mass.
10. Suggest two improvements in the method of this experiment.
