7 SUPPORT DESIGN

7.1 GENERAL RULES

The following design rules shall be applied to standard auxiliary piping supports as well as
to design of special supports:
The use of Standard Auxiliary Piping Supports as per TPGY collection shall be
maximized in order to limit the number of support types.
Piping shall be properly supported, anchored or guided to prevent undue line deflection,
stresses and excessive vibration and to protect piping and connected equipment from
excessive loading and expansion stresses.
All supports for all lines DN50 shall be indicated on the isometrics and/or General
Arrangement Drawings with the support mark as per standard sheets. The supports for
lines ≤ DN40 shall be designed completely by piping sub-contractor at site. However, the
necessity of supporting these lines as well as potential supporting points, etc. shall be
considered while detail engineering.
Temporary pipe supports shall be used only for load conditions encountered during
erection, hydrostatic testing, long-term maintenance work and repairs. The intended
purpose of temporary pipe supports which needed to be specified during the
engineering,
e.g. for hydro test, shall be clearly indicated on the relevant isometrics to ensure their
removal after use
Piping, which is subject to frequent dismantling, either for standard maintenance (e.g. for
decoking lines or lines connected to heat exchangers) or for operative requirements (e.g.
installation of blind flanges), shall be provided with supports for the erected as well as for
the dismantled positions.
Supports for piping connected to heat exchangers shall be designed to allow adjustment
of support and dismantling of pipe.
Rigid supports located in proximity to strain sensitive equipment such as pumps, turbines,
compressors, etc. shall be of adjustable type. Piping supports connected to reciprocating
pumps or compressors shall be designed strictly in accordance to the results of the stress
analysis; furthermore these lines shall be supported independently, i.e. with separated
foundations, in order to avoid the transmission of vibrations.
For all designed and tagged support elements such as spring hangers, rigid struts, shock
absorbers, etc., data sheets with the design conditions, e.g. loads, movements, etc., shall
be prepared by stress engineer in accordance to stress analysis.
Small bore lines ≤ DN40 may be restrained or supported on larger lines if this does not
induce excessive stresses and sag in the bearing line. The minimum pipe diameter of the
supporting line shall be DN100.

7.2 PIPE SHOES

The following lines shall be installed on pipe shoes:
 all insulated lines, independent of insulation purpose and all un-insulated lines with
hazardous fluids (PED fluid group 1)
 all stainless steel lines, insulated or un-insulated
 all galvanized steel lines, insulated or un-insulated

26

Lines with slope will be generally supported using pipe shoes from 100 mm to 300 mm
height trimmed to suit or shimmed to suit.
Carbon steel lines with non-critical fluids (PED fluid group 2) such as un-insulated utilities
shall rest directly on the structure or, in case of concrete supports, on an insert plate, i.e.
without any pipe shoe.
Insulated lines ≤ DN40 running on pipe racks or pipe ways shall be installed on shoes
anyway.

7.2.1 Carbon steel & low alloy steel lines

In general, pipes shoes shall be of welded type. For all lines, that require PWHT,
clamped pipe shoes shall be used. If anti-sliding bosses are required, e.g. at axial stops
and anchors, the material shall be as same quality as pipe specification material.
Hangers shall be clamped in any case.

7.2.2 Stainless steel lines

In general, all lines shall be installed on clamped pipe shoes with stainless steel clamps. If
anti-sliding bosses are required, e.g. at axial stops and anchors, the material shall be of
same quality as pipe specification material. Clamped hangers shall be used.

7.3 ATTACHMENTS BETWEEN PIPING AND SUPPORTS

Local acting supports shall preferably be avoided at pipe joints subject to concentrated
stresses (e.g. elbows, branch connections, reducers). If -by exception- a support at such a
joint is required, a comprehensive analysis of this joint shall be performed.
All elements integrally welded to the pipes, such as reinforced pads or protection shields,
shall be bored in order to evacuate the gas produced during welding. Furthermore all
elements which are in direct contact with the piping, i.e. clamps, etc. also, shall be of the
same metal group as the pipe. Pipe used for the fabrication of supports shall be
end-sealed and equipped with drain hole.
For thin pipe walls in direct contact with the beam of the support structure it is advisable to
fit the pipe with a protection shield. A pipe is considered thin-walled if
De
> 72 with D = outside diameter, S = corroded thickness
e
S
Care shall be taken to prevent any loss of contact between pipes and supports, giving due
consideration to the changes in pipe position during erection, operation, steaming out,
flushing and/or drying.

7.4 ATTACHMENTS BETWEEN SUPPORTS AND STRUCTURES

Except where it is necessary to dismantle the support, the piping supports shall be
connected to metal structures by means of welded connections. Pipe supports shall be
connected to reinforced concrete structures by means of welding to plates sunk into the
concrete. Pipe supports which are connected to fireproofed metal structures shall be
designed so as cause no break in the fireproofing protection.
Support structural members shall be designed on the basis of local or contract standards
for structural steel construction.
Piping connected to columns, vessels or heat exchangers shall preferably be supported
by the equipment themselves. Admissible force and moments and load limitations
respectively as specified by equipment vendor, specifications and/or codes & standards
shall be observed. In no case pipe supports shall be connected to pumps, turbines or
compressors.

7.5 SLIDING SUPPORTS

The need of sliding plates or rollers and the selection of the materials shall be based on
technical and economical considerations.
Due consideration shall be given to the effects of friction on all sliding contact surfaces
between pipe and support. Considering the friction factor STEEL/STEEL to be 0.3 and
STEEL/ STAINLESS STEEL to be 0.1, the local friction force shall be assumed as the
lower of the following two values:
 reaction multiplied by the friction coefficient of sliding contact surfaces
 elastic reaction of support evaluated for the maximum theoretical displacement of the
pipe (hypothesis of non-slide between pipe and support)
For grouped piping, the possibility of partially compensating individual friction forces
shall be evaluated and documented case by case.
Antifriction rollers shall be of standard construction self-lubricating type (phosphorus
bronze contact surface or equivalent). Vertical and transverse loads shall not exceed
vendor's recommendations. In evaluating friction force, the equivalent friction coefficient
shall be used according to data guaranteed by the vendor.
Antifriction sliding plates may be made of PTFE (or similar fluorocarbon resins) or Lubrite
(or equivalent) or stainless steel with suitable surface finish. Material shall be selected
according to the required service, paying special attention to the design temperature of
the sliding contact surface. Specific pressure on sliding contact surfaces shall fall within
the limits indicated by the vendor. Plates shall be sized and positioned to ensure their
integrity against and foreign matter (dust, dirt, etc.). In particular the upper plates shall
cover the lower plate in all pipe positions. When using PTFE, the pairing of sliding
contact surfaces shall be "Stainless Steel-PTFE".
The sliding plates shall comply with 7041D 000 JSS 1384 001 “Sliding plates”.

7.6 HANGER
Hanger shall be used for pipe supports if tensile stresses only are expected or where
resting supports are not applicable. Where the pipe is subject to movement at the
connection point, two hinges shall be provided to allow the hanger to follow such
movement.
The length of a hanger shall be at least 15 times the pipes horizontal movement.
Minimum hanger length may be halved provided there is an offset between the point of
connection of hanger to pipe and the point of connection to supporting structure, in the
opposite direction of excepted horizontal movement and of half its value.
In order to use hanger with lengths less than the minimum values given above, the
effect of vertical movement associated with hanger inclination shall be evaluated on a
case by case basis, in order to determine the effective force acting on the hanger and
the load variation on adjoining supports.
The bolt eyes of hanger shall be welded tight.
Hanger shall be adjustable when used with pipes having a diameter > DN50.
Safe loads for threaded hanger rods shall be based on the root area of the threads and
allowable stress of the material.
Hanger supply shall comply with 7041D 000 JSS 1383 001 “Rod & spring hangers”

7.7 VARIABLE AND CONSTANT SPRING SUPPORTS

The design and the selection of any spring hanger or spring box, either of variable or
constant type, shall be strictly in accordance to stress analysis and data sheet
respectively. Special consideration shall be given to the fact that natural frequency of the
JOB SPECIFICATION FOR DESIGN
AUXILIARY PIPING SUPPORTS

Page 11 of
26

flexible supports shall be appreciably lower the first natural frequency of the piping
system.
Variable spring hangers shall be used when piping connected to equipment and structures
cannot withstand load variations and movements resulting from the use of rigid support.
The load variation of variable spring hangers shall not exceed 25% of estimated maximum
reaction.
Constant pipe supports shall be used when piping to equipment and structures cannot
withstand load variations and movements resulting from the use of variable spring
hangers. The effective travel of a constant support shall not be less than 130% of design
travel. In all cases the difference between effective and design travel shall not be less
than 20 mm.
The rules indicated in the paragraph relevant to the hangers shall, wherever applicable,
apply to variable and constant spring hangers as well.
Variable and constant spring support supply shall conform to 7041D 000 JSS 1383 001
“Rod & spring hangers”

7.8 DYNAMIC SUPPORTS

If any dynamic support is required, the supply shall conform to 7041D 000 JSS 1386 001
“Dynamic piping supports”

8 STANDARD AUXILIARY PIPING SUPPORTS

The construction standard 7041D 000 STC 1390 001 “Standard Auxiliary Piping Supports”
