First Operations Research Workshop

1) Draw the region formed by the points that satisfy the following
conditions:
a)
y 3

y  x 1
y  3 x 0

b)Indicates whether the points (0, 0), (2, 1) and (1, 2) are part of
the solutions of the previous system.
2) Maximize the function z = x + y, subject to the following
restrictions:

 x  3 y  26

4 x  3 y  44
2 x  3 y  28
x 0

y  0

Note: Graph the solution

3) On a chicken farm, a "fattening" diet is given with a minimum
composition of 15 units of substance A and another 15 of
substance B. Only two classes of compounds are found on the
market: type I with a composition of one unit of A and five of B,
and type II with a composition of five units of A and one of B. The
price of type I is 10 euros and that of type II is 30 euros. The
question is: What quantities of each type must be purchased to
cover needs with a minimum cost? Note: Graph the solution
4) We have 210,000 euros to invest in the stock market. They
recommend two types of actions. Those of type A that yield 10%
and those of type B that yield 8%. We decide to invest a
maximum of 130,000 euros in type A and at least 6,000 euros in
type B. In addition, we want the investment in type A to be less
than or equal to double the investment in B. ¿What must be the
distribution of the investment to obtain maximum annual interest?
Note: Graph the solution.
5) A certain manufacturer produces two items, A and B, which
requires the use of two production sections: assembly section
and painting section. Item A requires one hour of work in the
assembly section and two in the painting section; and item B,
three hours in the assembly section and one hour in the painting
section. The assembly section can only be in operation for nine
hours a day, while the painting section can only be in operation
for eight hours each day. The profit obtained by producing item B
is 40 euros and that of A is 20 euros. Calculate the daily
production of items A and B that maximizes profit. Note: Solve by
simplex method.
6) A kiosk sells pens for 20 euro cents and notebooks for 30 euro
cents. We have 120 euro cents and we intend to buy the same
notebooks as pens, at least. What will be the maximum number
of pieces we can buy? Note: Graph the solution
7) A goldsmith makes two types of jewelry. Those of type A require
1 g of gold and 1.5 g of silver, selling them for 40 euros each. To
manufacture type B, it uses 1.5 g of gold and 1 g of silver, and
sells them for 50 euros. The goldsmith only has 750 g of each of
the metals in the workshop. Calculate how many jewels you have
to make of each type to obtain a maximum profit. Note: Graph
the solution.
8) A factory produces utilitarian and luxury refrigerators. The factory
is divided into two sections: assembly and finishing. The work
requirements are given by the following table:
MOUNTING FINISH
UTILITARIAN 3 hours 3 hours
LUXURY 3 hours 6 hours

The maximum number of working hours available daily is 120 in

assembly and 180 in finishing, due to operator limitations.
If the profit is 300 euros for each utility refrigerator and 400 euros
for each luxury refrigerator, how many of each should be
manufactured daily to obtain the maximum profit? Note: Solve by
Simplex Method.
9) It is desired to obtain three chemical elements from substances A
and B. One kilo of A contains 8 grams of the first element, 1 gram
of the second and 2 of the third; A kilo of B has 4 grams of the
first element, 1 gram of the second and 2 of the third. It is desired
to obtain at least 16 grams of the first element and the quantities
of the second and third must be at most 5 and 20 grams,
respectively; and the amount of A is at most twice that of B.
Calculate the kilos of A and those of B that must be taken so that
the cost is minimal if a kilo of A is worth 2 euros and one of B is
10 euros. Can any restrictions be removed? Note: Graph the
solution
10) A company owns three mines whose daily production is
shown in the table below (in tons). The company needs 60 tons
of high-grade ore, 48 tons of medium-grade ore and 50 tons of
low-grade ore. Minimize the cost of satisfying this level of
production if the daily operating costs are $200 for mine A, $200
for mine B, and $100 for mine C. Note: Solve by Simplex Method.
Mine Mineral Grade
High Medium Low
A 1 2 3
B 1 2 2
C 2 1 1
