Exam 2 Static and Mechanics of Materials I

Problem 2 – 30 points

To receive credit for this problem you must support your answer by showing all work. Consider the geometry
below:

100 lbs

300 lbs

Bars 1, 2, and 3 are joined together, and do not separate. Bar 1 is also joined to the wall, and stays attached to the
wall. Each bar has length L. Bars 1 and 3 are large, and we will assume for the purposes of this question that they
do not break. Bar 2 has a smaller diameter. The forces are applied as shown on the diagram.

The bars are made of malleable cast iron, whose properties are shown on the next page. If the failure mode for the
structure is sudden fracture, and we want a factor of safety of 3.0, what diameter should we choose for bar 2?

Problem 3 – 40 points

To receive credit for this problem you must support your answer by showing all work. Consider the geometry
below:

Bars 1 and 2 are joined together, and do not separate. Bars 1and 2 are also joined to the wall, and stay attached to
the wall. Each bar has length L. Bar 1 has cross-sectional area A1, and bar 2 has a smaller cross-sectional area A2.
The force P is applied as shown on the diagram. The Young’s modulus for both bars is E.

(a) Find the stress in bar 1 and bar 2. Write your answer in terms of known quantities (A1, A2, L, E, P).

(b) Now the bars are heated a known amount ΔT. Both bars have the same (known) coefficient of thermal
expansion α. Write the equations that would be necessary to solve for the new stresses in the bars. You need not
solve the equations, but clearly indicate which equations you would use.
