ACTIVITY 2: EM Spectrum

Part A. Understanding the EM Spectrum

Procedure:

1. Electromagnetic (EM) Spectrum is a continuum of electromagnetic waves arranged

according to frequency and wavelength. It is a gradual progression from the waves of
lowest frequencies to the wave of highest frequencies. The seven types of EM waves
have no exact dividing region.

2. Examine the EM Spectrum in Figure 1 below. Focus your attention on the number line
next to Wavelength (m), Types of Electromagnetic Waves, Frequency (Hz), and
Energy (eV). Write the approximate range of wavelength, frequency and energy of
the 7 types of EM wave in Table 1 below. The green vertical broken lines indicate an
approximate boundary of each type of EM wave. Choose the number closest to the
green broken line. Write your answers on the provided table below to make it
complete.

and energy of the 7 types of EM waves.
ACTIVITY 2: EM Spectrum
INSTRUCTION:
Once you've completed the table above, use it as a reference to
answer the following statement.
Part B. Comparing EM waves
Based on your observations in Part A, compare the types of
EM waves in terms of wavelength, frequency and energy by
choosing the right word from the parenthesis.

1. Radio waves have (longer, shorter) __________________

wavelengths than the gamma-ray.
2. Microwaves have (higher, lower) __________________ energy
than Infrared.
3. Visible light has (higher, lower) __________________ frequency
than X-ray.
4. Radio waves have (higher, lower) __________________ energy
than gamma-rays.
5. Infrared has (longer, shorter) __________________ wavelength
than UV.

ACTIVITY 2: EM Spectrum

Part C. Sum Up

Guide Questions
1. Which electromagnetic wave has the longest wavelength?

2. Which electromagnetic wave has the shortest wavelength?

3. Observe what happens to the wavelength of the

electromagnetic waves as they progress (goes rightward in
figure 1 from radio wave to gamma-ray). Does the
wavelength of the EM waves increase or decrease as we go
from radio waves to gamma-ray?

4. Which among the EM waves has the highest frequency?

5. Which among the EM waves has the lowest frequency?

6. The energy of an EM wave also depends on its frequency,
which means waves with higher frequency have the higher
energy too. Which among the EM waves has the highest
energy?

7. Which among the EM waves has the lowest energy?

8. What happens to the frequency of electromagnetic waves as

it progresses from radio wave to gamma-ray? Does the
frequency of the EM waves increase or decrease as we go
from radio wave to gamma-ray?
