may lead to obesity and poor health [10]

QUESTION 10: ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH.

Critical evaluate whether landfill sites are a necessary evil. Consider the
advantages and disadvantages of having landfill sites. Draw a conclusion about
whether they are good or bad and offer alternative solutions for waste disposal.
[10]
Advantages: Our waste needs to go somewhere. Municipalities collect waste and take
it to landfill sites. Landfill sites are large areas of ground on the edges of cities where
the cities’ waste is dumped.

Disadvantages: When the rubbish breaks down and decomposes, it forms a liquid
waste. This liquid often contains harmful chemicals and bacteria. This liquid soaks into
the ground and can get into the groundwater. This is a danger to plants, animals, and
humans. Communities that live close to landfill sites can suffer from burning eyes, sore
throats and headaches caused by gases given off by the decomposing waste. Landfill
sites that are not properly managed attract flies and rats that move to surrounding areas
and spread disease. Germs in the rotting rubbish can make people and animals sick.

Conclusion: Although there are more disadvantages than advantages, it is impossible

to live without landfill sites: our waste must go somewhere.

Alternatives: We can compact more of our waste, use less packaging and create
compost heaps in our gardens: recycle and re-use. [10]

QUESTION 11: COMMON DISEASES: Obesity and anorexia

Write a paragraph in which you explain whether you are at risk of becoming obese or
anorexic: describe what causes these conditions and how you would know if you had
one of these conditions. (symptoms) [10]
Obesity is a condition in which the person has a very high amount of body fat. Doctor’s
measures body mass index, or BMI. Obese people are at high risk of developing heart
disease, diabetes, and high blood pressure. In simple terms, people gain weight when
they eat more food than their body needs. However, some people gain weight much
quicker than others because of pre-existing health problems or genetic factors and
some people have psychological issues that cause weight gain. Furthermore, people
who are disabled or ill might not be able to get the exercise they need.

Anorexia is an eating disorder that is mainly found in adolescent girls who become
overly concerned with their body image and weight. It may be caused by biological
factors, genetics, emotional and personality disorders, or cultural and family pressure.
Learners’ application will differ – they might say that they eat a balanced diet and
exercise regularly. [10]
